Preventative Maintenance After Purchase on 88 740 Turbo wagon 700 1988

I recently purchased a 1988 740 Turbo Wagon with 109,000 miles on her. She has been fairly well maintained over the years but I have no records. I've been looking at the list in the FAQ for Preventative Maintenance After Purchase and I have a question about the coolant hoses and vacuum hoses. Would you just go through and replace them all for "good measure" that is for reliability? And the same with the coolant reservoir? Or would you just inspect and replace as needed? Money isn't growing on trees for me but it also isn't a huge concern--within limits.

For what it is worth I have changed oil, filter, air filter, brake fluid and the the timing belt was done less than a thousand miles ago by the PO--I do have the record for that.

    Change the plastic heater valve. I would also replace the heater hoses and evaluate the upper and lower radiator hoses and the hose connecting to the bottom of the coolant reservoir. Replace as necessary. As far as the coolant reservoir is concerned, I would replace it with the coolant reservoir from a 960 and connect it to the warning lamp in the instrument cluster. See the 700/900 FAQ for information. If you don't want to go to the trouble of installing the 960 coolant reservoir I'll give you, for the cost of shipping, an almost new 740 coolant reservoir.

    I would install new Continental brand v-belts unless the belts appear to have recently been changed.

    Re-solder the fuel injection relay. Once again,see the 700/900 FAQ.

    Thanks for all the help and advice! You've given some good work to do that will take me a while given my schedule. I guess one question I have: Is there a good parts supplier to purchase all of the hoses at with one order? Do you have any online favorites? Should I try my local Volvo dealer?

    Check the intake rubber hoses. They should look dry. If they're oily it means the turbo bypass valve is bad. Check the turbo intake hose on the bottom where it attaches to the turbo. If it's oily and soft replace it. They can collapse when tht turbo starts sucking in extra air. Make sure the plug wires are Bougicord brand. Remove and clean the throttle body assy. Remove and clean the IAC valve with brake cleaner. The valve device tends to get gummed up with oil vapors from the turbo. It should flop around freely inside the housing. Check the hose connection on the intake manifold from oil seperator assy. It tends to get blocked with hard carbon deposites.

    Check and clean all grounds - engine straps, top & botton, left front fender, rear, etc.

    Clean the pins on all connectors, apply dielectric grease and zip tie any that you can.

    I recommend that you do one connector each week after you are driving the car, that way you will know where to look if your brick acts up.

      James, How would you clean the pins on the connectors? Would you use steel wool or a wire brush? And how do you locate all the grounds? Is there a diagram or do you just scrounge around? Thanks for the help.

        I have cleaned pins with with a tiny wire brush and small strips of emery cloth. My success is debatable - sometimes just unplugging the connector and plugging it back in does some cleaning as the female scrapes over the male.

        I scrounge around - look for terminals that have straps or wires broken - remove and clean the mounts on some electrical parts.

        For instance, I found that the frame that held the ABS in my '90 744 TI was used as a ground to the inner fender.

        The most troublesome grounds are the ones inside the front fenders, just back of the headlights. They are spade terminal clusters with a bunch of wires plugged onto them. A bad connection there can cause all manner of weird electrical malfunctions. Usually you can just take a 1/4" ratchet with a 6" extension and 10mm socket and back off and re-tightened the connector block mounting screws on both sides. Better yet, remove the connector blocks entirely and clean and lube the spades with dielectric grease and reinstall. You can use steel wool to clean them, but I prefer Scotchbrite because it won't leave any iron residue. Use dielectric grease on the back of the connectors and the fender as well, after cleaning them. If the female spade terminals seem loose, you can squeeze them down a bit. I've solved headlights not working and non-stop wipers by doing this.

        Get some DeOxIt spray at a good electronics supply shop and just spray it on the metal connectors, then protect with dielectric grease and reassemble.

    For peace of mind and to prevent worse damage, replace all the coolant hoses (including any to the oil cooler), the heater water valve, and the reservoir. Then keep a close eye on the radiator, especially the upper inlet, for plastic cracking. Radiators last a reliable maximum of ten years. Consider installing a low coolant warning lamp per the FAQ.

    take one of the coolant hoses off & look inside,Better to replace all the hoses including the heater hose & the hot water shutoff valve connected to the vacuum unit.That is plastic & if it breaks you lose all your coolant.drivers side,by the firewall.
