uneven tire wear 700 1989

hey all-
hearing some rumbling/humming from pass. side (started about a week ago) while driving at lowish speeds. there is uneven wear on the outside tread of the tire (inside looks pretty good). i just noticed the uneven wear about the time i noticed the humming. a few months back when i had the car on jack stands i did the wheel movement test and they seemed pretty good-no lateral movement. i don't have jack stands now to do the same test.
there is also some clunking from the front end after going over bumps (symptom for a few months).

i just got my tax return and i wanna take care of this ASAP but would like to make sure i'm not replacing the wrong parts. sound like ball joint/control arms or tie rods??? i'm very novice when it comes to suspension/steering so any help would be great.

If you end up replacing the tie rods consider getting a 4 wheel alignment afterwards, not just a 2 wheel alignment. If the rear toe-in is off it can cause the wear you describe.

Take alook at the FAQs for suspension tips. If your control arm/radius arm bushings are original, there have been several mods since then.(the front bushing)

Could you have hit something, like a curb, and bent a tierod? That would cause the wheel to toe in and wear the outside of the tread.

i actually thought of that earlier today. my gf drives the car and she ran a curb not too long ago that knocked the lower valance off. that would make sense. i'm going to jack the car up tomorrow and take a look underneath and check for hub play.

I mentioned the tie-rod because when I replaced the rack in my car, I found the replacement rack I picked up at the junkyard had a bent tie-rod. It was a ZF, not what came in my car, which has the outer ends of the boots clamped around rubber "pucks" that sit in slightly necked down areas of the tie-rods. That's where the tie-rod was bent and it was not obvious to the eye. Easy enough to straighten out with a big bench vise and a hickey.
