Thanks for all the tips, head gasket job proceeding well considering time limitations. Lifted head off today, verified what I knew, i.e. gasket was shot allowing coolant to leak out. Waiting for gasket kit from one of the usual suppliers (Elring kit) and have one question.

Can I simply put the new water pump seal (between pump and head) and drop the head on and get adequate squish of the seal or do I need to lower the pump and do it like I'm replacing a pump. Hopefully this makes sensel

Makes perfect sense. Just install a new seal in the pump groove, and bolt the head down. If it sealed before, it will seal now.

I did (yesterday) to my 1995 and it's holding up fine.
