help, need 3rd row seating with more room than my 245; 700/900?

I drive a 1976 245 but now find myself in carpools with high school age children and need more room in the 3rd row seat. Does the 700/900 Volvo have more room (i.e., does it accomodate a larger occupant)? I refuse to get a SUV and sure hate to get a minivan. Also wonder if any of the FWD Volvos have good 3rd row seating and is as durable/reliable as 245.
Thanks for your opinion and help...

As mentioned. the 3rd row has a wee bit more width but not really any more length/depth. It might be time to consider an XC90...or a Mazda5 if you absolutely have to avoid an minivan or SUV.

Another option is the mislabeled "CUV" known as the RAV4...It really is just a tall wagon with tires that are bigger than necessary. Think of it as Carolla with a glandular problem.

The only RWD options that come to mind that are not a SUV are the Mercedes e-series wagons. I still would not want to be a full-sized teenager in the back of on of those for more than about 15-20 minutes, but the biggest difference is the depth of the foot well. It is a good 3 inches deeper which keeps the occupants from being so close to chewing on their knees.

Thank you all. Good information. The 3rd row seat should let me keep my 245 another year or two, but not a long-term solution. Too bad since the 240 is a long-term car.

The third seat setup on the 700/900/90 wagons seem a wee bit larger; yet not too much. Maybe more depth from rear-facing rear seat to the rear hatch / gate.

The 700/900 is a wider body versus the 145/245/265 Certainly more room for the two front occupants and the three rear seat occupants. Still, though 2+5 seating.

A trip to a salvage yard with a third seat or of you find one for sale may allow you to try it out and measure for space. I believe the third seat in 700/900/90 wagons secures only two occupants. Maybe three? I'd have to look again at one of these.

Check out the 700/900/90 FAQ here:

    http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ThirdSeatInstallation/thirdseatinstallation.htm

Shows third seat install in a 700/900/90 that did not have a rear-facing third seat. Looks like the 245 third seat that can support and secure only two occupants.

If you get a 700/900/90, then you have all the wear items diagnosis and replacement unless the prior owner has maintained the vehicle and provides records to the effect.

Volvo third row seats in all models except the xc90 are designed for small children only. Anyone taller than about 4 feet will be cramped in all situations. You need an XC90 or a van.
