Typical life of Bosch fuel pump ? 900

What is the typical life of the Bosch (main) fuel pump on a NA 940 with Bosch fuel injection ? My 1994 wagon has 183K and the original fuel pumps.

If the in-tank pump fails, will the car still run with just the main pump ?

Thanks,

Mike

I think you can expect alot more time on the main pump. Easy to swap out. Expensive new but a good used one is nice to have on hand. The fuel system will not work properly without the in-tank pump and it makes the main work harder

Tons of discussion on this and tons of disagreement. I have NEVER had a main pump fail under 300K. Small sample size, 3 K-Jet cars with over 200K and one 760 turbo with 240K miles.

In-tank pump failure will eventually shorten the life of the main pump but mainly it increases the driveability problems. I have had in-tank pumps fail on an average at about 60K...all aftermartket replacements that I installed.

Thanks for the information. Does that mean my original in-tank pump might have failed and I wouldnt know it ?

No, you'll know the in-tank pump is bad if the car runs poorly when there is less than a 1/4 tank of gas. You can also test it by opening the gas cap with the car idling and put a stethoscope or hose inside and try to hear it running or not...:)

BTW - Volvo (Bosch) main pumps usually last a long time - in my limited experience. My 90 240 main pump was still going strong at 300k when I sold the car. My 850's pump is still healthy at 200k.

Seen these fail at 140k and seen 240/700/850/900 Volvo with 250-300+ with what some guessed as the original.

They can make noise like a bee buzzing in a jar a little bit usually as you turn on the key and the LH-Jetronic pressure up the system, then stops the in-tank and main pump.

When you fill the tank, always fill it full. Not so good to motor about with a few gallons and not much more.

Always consider inspection and replacement of the rubber low pressure fuel lines: - between the fuel rail exit to the steel line.
- the in-tank pump out to the main fuel pump in.

Ethanol hastens deterioration of these rubber fuel lines that are 15+ years. Request replacement fuel line that is okay with E-85 as they are fine with gasoline (octane [primarily], septane, nonane) and the like.

cheers,
