Brake Failure Light: 1987 Volvo 245 GL 200

I have a 1987 Volvo 245 GL. Periodically, the brake failure light illuminates on the dashboard even though the brakes appear to be fine. Can anyone tell me what typically triggers this red light? I do not have any brake fluid leakage and all brake pads are fine.

Thanks for your help!

    Brake Failure Light: 1987 Volvo 245 GL 200 1988

I found fault in the flexible printed circuit board of my driver's side rear brake. One of the light sockets contacting, when screwed in, the flexible printed circuit board had rubbed a hole in the copper.

It was localized by having someone step on the brake while pushing down on the corners of the car to see if the brake light flickered due to the short.

The solution was to apply a dab of silver epoxy to the circuit board to repair the copper. It also can be replaced.

You sure you are not talking about the bulb failure relay? The Brake Failure Warning light has nothing to do with the brake lights.

On pre-abs cars it is the differential pressure switch in the octopus. On ABS cars (and the anomalous 91) it is level switch in the master cylinder res...at least on 240's I have seen.

Search "Brake Failure light". There have been more than a few recent threads on exactly this. If you want excellent pictures add "art" to the search and you will find all the (numerous) posts where Art B has added his exceptional pictorials with circles and arrows.
