Is my AW71L tranny toast?? 700 1989

In Feb 2012, I replaced the AW70 (>200,000miles)on my 89 740 sedan with an AW71L (120,000 miles) from the Boneyard. Worked great at first, then started slipping at highway speeds. Since son had the car, he opted to have a shop replace the filter and replace the 4 month old fluid. Last month, when I got the car back, I flushed the tranny via the cooling line ( as per FAQs). Now not shifting into 2nd and slipping in first gear when cold (at first startup). I removed the stop crimped onto the kickdown cable and it shifts smoothly once it is warmed up. But still it still stays stuck in first at startup, and jerks out of gear at a stop.
Should I do another filter change or just give up and replace it with another donor tranny from the Boneyard. I have found an AW70L on a 90 740 with 130,000 miles for $129. Just have to pull it myself (with help from another BBer).
Thanks for any suggestions.

Unindexed FAC info on K-D cable adjustment, etc. 700 1989

"I removed the stop crimped onto the kickdown cable..."
• IMO that was a mistake.

Look in the 700/900FAQ under this heading:
Transmission Service Procedures. From there, you'll have to hunt down about 12-15 screens to find the (not indexed) "Kick-Down Cable Adjustment" heading for info about the "ferrule" you removed and how to get the cable re-adjusted properly.

If the cable seems to be sticking inside it's sheath, position it as shown below and dribble in some ATF to lubricate it. Be patient as it takes time for the ATF to find it's way down. Using pliers to work the cable in and out periodically helps.

Is my AW71L tranny toast?? 700 1989

Removing teh stop on the cable got it to halfway function, might want to try replacing teh cable before resorting to surgery. You would be shocked how much that darn cable has to do with the function on those things

Really? I will try to obtain a new cable and install. Even though the cable now in seems to be a replacement one. Is it because the cable gets stuck inside the sheath? or stretches?
Please describe your experiences before and after replacing the kickdown cable on your transmission.
Thanks,
el Raidman

It stretches, and can also have broken strands inside tha casing, either will cause it to shift strange, not go into upper gears or sometimes not even want to move from a dead stop as if the tranny were a complete gonner. Heck, I've had the darn cable flip itself off the pulley one time ine a case of aggressive accelerator snapping and that made the car not want to move as if the tranny had died, just had to slip the cable back on the pulley :-)

Replace kickdown cable 700 1989

Replace cable, crucial part of tranny! A real PITA repair, I had the transmission specialists install mine. Part is relatively inexpensive.
