Dead 240 1992 sedan 200

Yesterday daughter called and stated that the car died and dash lights came on and won't restart with a jump, she tried twice and could not keep the car running.

Since she was 20 miles away, I had our friendly mechanic come up with tow truck. We arrived and jump started the car, alternator putting out 11 volts. Towed car home.

Today installed good alternator, tested at NAPA, is putting out 14 volts. I installed alternator with new ground wire and tried to jump start. Nothing. The jumper cables started to smoke, I pulled them off and rechecked connections , all proper, + to + and - to -. I checked the wiring on the alternator and the new ground wire was charred and melted. Stumped.

Stopped everything and wrote the Brickboard for advice please.

Could be a dead short in a large, unfused cable; maybe the main alternator output cable that goes under the front crank pulley and joins the battery positive cable at the starter lug. This would make the jumper cables smoke and since the new alternator is trying to feed 12V into a dead short, its ground cable wouldn't handle the load. You can check by first disconnecting the battery's negative terminal, then the Red alternator cable from the B+ terminal. Check the Red cable's resistance to ground (engine block). Should be...

*edit* ..after some thought. it probably requires the Red alternator cable to be disconnected at both ends to properly check if it is shorted to ground.
