Friend's car, 94 940T Bosch

Socket 6

1-4-4* No load signal from fuel injection system
Bad fuel injection relay; faulty wiring from LH to EZK; bad LH module
Engine lacks power; stalls; doesn't start or is jerky

What exactly is a 'bad fuel injection relay'? do they mean the rsr/fi relay, or the pump relay? The rsr has been changed with a 'thought to be good' used one, no difference. Can try another later.

What is a 'bad LH module'? ECU?

Quoting from the Rex/Regina (same for LH 2.0/EZK) fault tracing manual:

"In the partial load range, a load signal test is carried out twice per engine revolution. If the load signal is consistently high or low, fault code 1-4-4 is set." (Signal is from The FI Control Module to the Ignition CM.)

    "Possible Fault Causes"
    • Open-circuit or short-circuit to ground between the Fuel Injection CM pin #25) to the Ignition CM pin #8.
    • Defective FI Control Module.
Open-circuit in power supply to FI Control Module #9.

That last one is singled out in a 1997 Service Bulletin on the 1-4-4 code, which says:

"Poor soldering on FI System Relay* output 87/1 can cause an intermittent open-circuit in the main power supply to pin 9 at the LH 2.4 FI Control Module, which would lead to the FI module's failure to send the "load signal" from its pin #25 to pin #8 at the EZK Ignition Control Module — resulting in the 1-4-4 EZK code."

    * This is the other relay found in the white case with the Fuel Pump relay. Collectively they become the "Fuel Injection Relay."

NOTE: The RSRelay is not the same as the "Relay, fuel injection (MFI)" as it's identified in the Regina Wiring Diagrams (item 2-13).

Thanks for this interesting detail Bruce, it's what I thought I remembered as being relevant.
So to restate, a new fuel Pump relay may cure this issue, not by affecting the fuel pump but allowing a good signal to the ECU.
      Is that right?

I think the theory here Jerry is about a brief momentary loss of main power to the ECU, since FI relay terminal 87/1 is singled out as the possible culprit. And I think I once read a post where the actual weak spot was the corresponding female terminal in the relay rack, rather than the relay itself.

That FI relay 87/1 terminal is the primary ECU power source at pin 9, so it may get hot and burnt from carrying all the current for the Pump relay coil, RSR coil, ECU, Injectors, AMM, and IAC motor.

It seems that if the ECU "hiccups" for lack of 87/1 voltage at pin 9, then during that short dead time the missing "Load Signal" pulses from ECU 25 (to EZK 8) will set the 1-4-4 code.

    Dear jerryc,

Hope you're well. You're correct to think that the reference is to the radio interference suppression relay, a.k.a. the fuel injection relay. If You have a spare, "known good" fuel pump relay, I'd make that change, simply because it is easy to do.

The "LH Module" indeed is the Engine Control Unit, usually mounted on the door-side of the passenger's footwell.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Thx spook, the way I wrote that it can appear I have no idea, where actually I'm looking for accuracy of reference. I had never noticed the 'LH module' language before, and I want to be accurate with advice to the owner.
I already gave him one relay, I have a box full as they have such a rich history of failure, so more are on the way.
      Thanks again.
