No Start 87 240 B230F Jetronic. 200

Got a problem.
I've had a problem a few times of my 87 Volvo 240 B230F Jetronic not wanting to start. After I waited a hour or so (maybe less) it would crank and run normally until the next no start.
I'm pretty familiar with these cars so I thought I would be able to handle it if it refused to start and get it home.
Well yesterday I was working at a Polling place...urging my candidate on, and when I got ready to leave....no start.
A small "chug-a-lug" and then nothing.
I've got power to the coil and the fuel relay pulls in (the first stage), but the second stage doesn't activate and the pumps don't run.
I think that I've narrowed it down to the distributor...and a problem with the internal electronics in the distributor.
I pulled the coil wire from the distributor, held it close to ground and cranked the engine.....no spark.
As I said, I have 12V on the coil primary, so the problem must be in the distributor.
I also found that the connector where the signal wires enter the distributor was cracked and the wires were supporting the cable.
I'm going back to the car this morning and taking a spare ignition control unit, coil, fuel relay and distributor.
Any other ideas that I may have missed?
thanks
steve

It was the Fuel Pump relay.
First thing that I did was swap the relay with a known good one and she fired right up.

I had re-flowed the solder on the relay when the problem first showed it's head about 2 weeks ago and the problem went away, so I assumed that the relay was the cause but it was repaired.....wrong.

This is the first relay that I've experienced that failed for some other reason than bad solder joints.
Just goes to show, can't assume anything.

    Thanks for the responses
    steve

I have a relay as well that was soldered and worked for years, but alas it has failed and not due to solder joints this time.

If it happens again I had a no start like you in my 84 244ti but it was the connections to the relay. The wires where really hot and you could see the power supply wire was brown from the heat.
I pulled the relay out then using a very small flat head screw driver unlocked the tabs and pulled the wires out one at a time to tighten the connecters with a needle nose pliers. Now it works fine and no heat issue's.

Trust me, the problem you speak of is multiples about 12-fold in the 7-9 series with the "relay tray". Dreat idea in concept poorly executed in pratice for cars that often top 350K miles.

I looked through my notes (car is long gone) and it proved to be an intermittent heat-related open on one of the coils...one-in-10,000 failure but they happen.

It is a very common problem on the relay sockets in Volvos.

It is rare but some relays do fail in other ways. I forget what it was but the "system relay" on my 760 turbo still failed occasionally after a resoldering job. I check the connector and everything else. When I finally ponied up for a new relay, problem went away.

Glad to here it is fixed.

"I also found that the connector where the signal wires enter the distributor was cracked and the wires were supporting the cable."

if the wires are cracked there then it's very possible the insulation is shot where the wires pass under the crank pulley.

so before you start swapping parts check the wires

pull the coil wire from the COIL and try again. a bad coil wire will cause no spark.

while cranking, test coil terminal 1 with a testlight and see if it flickers. if it does, the dist is ok. if not, then check the wiring from the dist to the ignition ecu under the crank pulley. you may be right, the dist could be bad. good luck, chuck.
