IPD front sway bar mounting question 444-544

I have a 1963 544 sedan and I am wondering if I should strengthen the mounting point where the mount and bushing goes against the frame with a piece of flat steel. It seems that I remember a post from years back of this being a week spot. There is no rust and the lower a frame has been strengthend where the sway bar link attaches. Thanks for any help. Larry

    Hello,

    We have never found it necessary to preemptively re-enforce the sway bar mounts on the frame with a sway bar update.

    Although it might not be a bad idea if a road rally were being run.

    We have repaired more than 1 sway bar mount on a PV, but rust or an accident were usually the cause and in most cases the PV still had the stock sway bar.

      I had to eventually repair both sides on the front on my PV. But it was clear that rust was to blame. One side tore out after about a year of... 'spirited' driving. The other one lasted about 8 years. I think I have some pics of it somewhere...




      Rust *just might* have been a very slight factor in that failure...

      Please excuse my *horrible* welding. I'm not a good welder, and that was upside down in a cramped space, tacking to rotten grungy sheetmetal. I cut off most of the worthless metal, wire-wheeled what was left until shiny. But still, migging upside down, and sticking a thick solid chunk of steel to thin(ner than normal) sheetmetal isn't easy for me.

      My first patch has held a long time, the second one has too.

      When I put my rear IPD sway in, the left side tore out with in a week. I reinforced that with a diagonal welded in strut (under the rear seat), then the second one tore out a week later, so I did the same patch on it. Those have held for 10 years since.

      Thanks Eric for the reply. The rear sway bar was mounted using different steel plates than what was supplied and was welded to the floor pan. The muffler clamps that go around the rear axle for the sway bar attachment didn`t look to sturdy, is there a better solution for that? Thanks, Larry

        I've never had the slightest issue with the rear axle mounts for the sway bar in over 10 years of use. The seat pans, not so good (but mine didn't come with the reinforcing plates), but no issues at all with the axle u-bolt mounts.

          Hello,

          I concur.

          We have installed at dozens of rear IPD sway bars that use either 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" U bolts with no major issues.

          IIRC, however, IPD did update their rear mounting hardware during that time span from U bolts made of 5/16" diameter rod to 3/8" with stronger saddles and I think IPD also started icluding their re-enforcing plates for the floor pans with their sway bar kits at the same time instead of making you buy them separately.
