Vibration solved?, differendial fill method, and no grease ports in U-joints 900

Wife complained of a vibration in her 1995 944, 120K. I checked and felt a very mild vibration, a nice purr, an unloaded new horizontal mill style purr. I searched the threads for possibilities. Brakes, U joints, center support and more. While jacked up I even started the and spun the rear tires, idle only and of course nothing. Shook the drive shaft near the center support and it felt solid but I got some movement using force. Normal I think. Thinking it has to be one of the U joints, rear most likely, I noticed a pinion seal leak, very small as compared to my 1993 945.

Checked and maybe down a 1/2 to 3/4 inches from the filler hole. Added About 1/2 quart with a little overfilled since the back end was up. I quit since it was getting cold. Vibration was gone, at lest for now.

Could that have been the problem?

A side issue solved, filling the differential. I tried a pump, messy, and smaller bottles. Any tubing that would fit over the tapered end of a quart bottle of gear oil will drain about 3/4 into the differential.

Discovery: Maybe 240s some or all have the grease ports in the U joints but this 940 did not. These were solid, no set screws for a tapered grease gun end.

Sorry about the blurred photo, the camera was not wearing glasses.

I have to call it. It's been over a week since I added a half quart to the differential. No vibration and I hope there isn't damage to the internals.

That sounds like good news. As I always say, I glad to be wrong on this one.

Certainly not a hard and fast rule but based on my experience the 7/9 series cars up to and including 1991 have universal joints that will accept grease fittings.

I have never seen a grease fitting on a 7/9 car, including the 5 I have had and the dozens I have been under, except ones that were replaced.

I have removed set screws and installed fittings on an 88 turbo sedan and a 91 turbo wagon. Both required using a step drill on the support bearing plate to access the fitting with a grease gun after installation.

I'll check my '92 244 and hope for the best.

i have run into vary viscous diff oil as it seems to be winter when ever I fill it up. Has anyone ever heated the oil slightly for easier pouring?

I am guessing your vibration will come back. It is good you discovered the leak and will not be monitoring it, I suspect the jacking, jiggling and other contortions temporarily changed the alignment of the driveline parts.

If your 940 is new enough to have the tailshaft bearing instead of bushing, I would be looking at the u-joints.

Check your transmission mount for wear and engine mounts. If either of these get worn it will vibrate at different speeds.

Vibration solved?, differential fill method, and no grease ports in U-joints 900

It was a steady and constant noise, vibration but more like gears meshing, synchronous with drive shift spin. Motor mounts are original and needs to be checked. The transmission mount is aftermarket and at least 5 years should need replacing seeing that the original was shot.

I'm waiting for the vibration to come back. Was being 1/2 to 3/4" low on differential fluid the cause and was I close to doing damage, id est, how low is too low?

Thanks for correcting my spelling error.

Tom

"It is good you discovered the leak and will not be monitoring it..."
I will, monitor it until I replace the seal.

"I would be looking at the u-joints."
Yeah, tanks a bunch. I won,t do this myself, that is, until I find out how much it will cost.

"I won,t do this myself, that is, until I find out how much it will cost." I'll admit, I do not bother to repair these myself either. I diagnose them myself and then find out where the local 4x4 nuts take their driveshafts and have them do it for me. Like my description of drywall work, something just do not "pay" to do yourself.

The 240's have a threaded in bolt that can be taken out and a Zerk fitting threaded in to grease the 'U' joints.

Maybe Volvo / Ford got cheap on the 900's

Hopkins FloTool 10106B/6, nice. I wish I found one before had to invent one.

1995 was still Volvo all the way. It had to be a sourcing "cost out", eliminating two operation for thousands and thousands of U-joints.
