hello everyone,

my 240 had been out of commission for months until about 2 weeks ago, when I replaced the wiring harness and the alternator. that fixed all of my electrical problems, and nothing seemed to be amiss while I took it for several short drives around town.

I decided it was ready for a longer highway trip, and everything was going great until a couple miles before getting home, when I took a turn and the engine shut off. I still had power and everything electrical seems to still be working great. full battery and tank of gas.

when I try to start, all the usual noises happen and the engine turns, but there is no roar. I tried starting with the gas pedal in and even pulling on the throttle under the hood, but it seems like no fuel is getting to the engine? what do you think?

I should mention that for the past year or so the start has been a little hard, but tolerable. I'm at 200,000 miles and I presume the fuel injector and even the flame trap are factory (I bought the car at 150,000). my fuel pressure regulator and my air mass meter are pretty new.

Ok, let me make sure I have what you have tried:

CPS new
Jumping fuses runs the fuel pump relay
Does not start with starter fluid

So, the ignition power stage would be my next suspect if I was 100% sure all fuses were OK. Also, if a 1990 has an ECU with a colored sticker instead of white it is suspect as well.

Testing for spark is pretty simple...remove a plug, place it against the head or something else, have someone else crank.

Also look at the 25 amp fuse near the battery for corrosion and poor contact.

Yes, it was dirty (leaves and rain get in on that side) but it hasn't broken, and cleaning it didn't help.

try jumping fuse 4 to fuse 6 and you should here the fuel pump run. try starting it.

Yup, when I jump the fuses I hear the fuel pump run. Should I try the ignition at the same time that I'm bridging the fuses like that?

Just a gut feeling. Crank Positioning Sensor.

Taking the turn may have given enough 'g' force to mess up the already borderline wiring.

Have someone crank the engine as you wiggle that Positioning Sensor Harness. See if you get teh car to fire-up

I replaced the CPS because the wiring was completely shredded up. Still no start though.

Hmm, I wonder if the crank positioning sensor went bad in my 240 and caused it to suddenly quit while I was driving it.
If that happened, would the car even turn over if I tried to start it?

the fuel pump relay on the firewall behind the glove box, small white cover can be removed to expose the relays, push the contacts manually as a test.Very common failure. Not sure if you have the 25 amp fuse on that year by the battery? If so check it make sure it did no go.

That 25 amp fuse is good. I haven't tested the fuel pump relay (don't really know how) but at this point I think I have a spark issue, not a fuel issue.

one of the easiest ways to check the no fuel or no spark issue is to get a can of quick start, remove the accordion hose into the intake manifold, spray some quick start, place it back on without tightening it up and start the engine.

if it fires up you've got spark.

at this point you have not done enough diagnosis for any of us to help you properly.

I tried the quick start spray, but no dice.
also, I bridged fuses 4 and 6 and I could hear the fuel pump running fine.
so I think I have no spark. but all the spark plugs are new. where do I go from here?
