1982 GLT high beam out 200

Evening Group,
Looking for help with a lighting electrical problem.
Car is a 1982 GLT with the 4 rectangular bulbs.
I've lost the high beam on the passenger side of the car.
Driver side high beam works ok when the high beam stalk is pulled
but not the passenger side. I thought it was just the light so I bought
a new one, replaced it and still no high beam. The wiring behind the light
is all clean and intact. Not to sure where to look next.
Is it possible the stalk in the steering column has gone south??
Any and all help appreciated. Winter weather is upon us and it would be nice to have the lights back on.

Thanks,

John I.

Thanks for the fast replies James, matt and CB.
The problem is now sorted out. It was bad wiring under the washer bottle that had been taped together and just barely holding on. There are also 4 ground wires below the washer bottle that were covered with corrosion. After all connections were reworked and clean the high beam is back.

Thanks again for all the help,

John I.

I had a similar problem with our '88 745 GLE - I measured 12 volts at connector, but still no light - I changed the connector, no light.

Finally, I stripped the wire back and found a ton of black goop and only one strand of wire left.

I had to replace the wiring back to the firewall.

Any black goop around your wiring?

check out the Hi/Lo relay. It's on the rail behind the battery on the drivers side fender. Oblong Aluminum body....(when you use the hi/lo stalk you should hear a click from this relay)

It's just an electro-mechanical relay. Unplug it a check the contacts for corrosion.

The Alum cap comes off, there are tabs on the bottom. check the contacts inside for burns/corrosion. Use a super-fine grade (400 to 1000) Wet/Dry sand paper to polish them. With the cap off, replug it and use the stalk to click on the hi beams and watch the relay to see if the contacts are doing what they should.

Don't think the stalk can cause one to work but not the other.

Gotta be either a bad new bulb (it happens) or wiring.

A good first step would be to swap in a known-good bulb. That is to say, put the bulb from the drivers side in there.

As for wiring, I recall having an odd headlight issue with an '82. Don't remember what it was, but seems the cure was found at some junction on the drivers side, between the battery and the headlights. I think the wires in that space feed both headlights.

Worth a look anyhow...
