just want to verify timing issue and alignment.

If crank gear notch is lining up with the nub cast on engine and the cam gear is lined up on top ......it would have to be the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.

Use these reference photos and you can't go wrong:

      Hi Chris,

I did exactly what's in the photo .....just hoping against hope that my engine noise(sounds like rod knock or connector clack) was possibly something easy to fix.

The wierdest thing is that it gets louder when stepping on the gas peddle and is louder when starting the car but quites down a little latter.

I know I have to check the belt alignment with marks again and do a compression test but I'm just a little lasy and it's in the 30's and snowing/raining out there.

Also when I do open it again I just want to have thought out all options I and you guys can think of.

Maybe a terminology issue. You can't use the crank pulley or nub. You have to use the washer behind the crank pulley. And removing oil filler cap, front two cam lobes should be pointing skyward.

3 Using a wrench on the crankshaft pulley center bolt, bring the
engine to TDC, No 1 firing. This is indicated when the mark on
the camshaft sprocket is in line with the mark on the camshaft
cover or the drivebelt backplate. At the same time the marks on
the crankshaft sprocket guide plate and the oil seal housing
will be in line. (The pulley mark cannot be used even if the
pulley is still in place, since the timing scale is on the
drivebelt cover.) Although it is not critical, the position of
the auxiliary shaft sprocket timing mark should also be noted
    (photos).

I guess what I'm trying to say ....is if belt is broken off and crank and cam had been moved by hand ......if both are aligned independently by hand ( the crank gear gap aligning with the marking on the crank case/block not the pulley)
to the desired positions would it have to be TDC when belt is put back on?

Confirm the two cam lobes are pointing skyward and line up the dots. And you can put you finger over the #1 spark plug hole while you move the crank to the timing mark. You'll feel compression stroke(air blowing out). You should be pretty close to the marks, align them and replace the belt. FYI, I don't use the marks on the belt or worry about the intermediate shaft.(rear drive distri)
