Hello all,
My volvo loses power for about 1 or 2 seconds every once in a while. It feels like a sudden thing, not a clogged fuel filter. My volvo guru leans against questioning the fuel pump, but it sounds strange to me, like its pumping too hard. Sounds like a bee hive at idle instead of the single click every couple seconds. He checked voltage at the pump, got 12v. Ive tried a new relay under the dash on the passengers side, Ive tried a new fuel pressure regulator, it looked ancient anyways. I realize I could be jumping to conclusions thinking its on the fuel side rather than ignition, but Im not sure what to check on the ignition side. Please reply with any ideas or suggestions. One other thing, the car rarely starts on the first turn of the key, always starts on the 2nd attempt. Thanks in advance, Jay

I finally had to take it to a shop as it doing so badly and I was out of town. They said it was low fuel pressure and replaced the brand new airtec from oreilly with oem bosch. Said that my original fuel had gone out, and then I replaced it with cheap after-market airtec. Said it put out 26 psi, and didnt have a 1 way check valve. also ditched the oreilly aftermarket coil, said it didnt have a ballast resistor or something built in, put in a used bosch they had. Problem seems to be fixed so far, hopefully it stays that way. Bosch pump was 160$. Oreilly pump was 90$ in stock, another one said 55$ for airtec ordered. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I approve of both moves. The Bosch coils are the best...hands down. The fuel pump that you had "go bad" is extremely unusual for a Bosch pump unless the car sat for extended periods or you were over 300K miles but it does happen. The non-Bosch pump as a replacement is honestly something I have not heard much of either way unless it is the pre-pump.

This could be a variety of things. We had an '85 that did this for years. Our mechanic could never figure it out because it was so intermittent. Finally, I fixed it by removing the connector to the ignition module on the front right fender and tinning each of the pins in the module with solder. Apparently, one of the conductors in the connector was loose and was not making a good connection to one of the pins. By the way, the manuals say that this connector should not be disconnected and, if it is, it will be permanently damaged. This may have been what happened to our old car.

I did figure out that the gas wasnt the issue, bought a spark gap tester and found no spark when the problem occurs. Unfortunately that was after replacing the gas pump and filter. Also, battery tested bad at autozone, have a new one now from napa. Still have the problem. Broke down and am having a shop look at it, yes, its come to that.. I think it must be that ignition module (mine is black, 2nd component behind the battery), or pick up coil in the distributor. other than that, the only thing I can think of is the computer.

The hall effect sendor wires broke on our '84, but it would kill the engine completely. If you wiggle the wires going into the distributor you might be able to tell if that is it.

thanks, that sounds like it could be the culprit, Ive replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, no joy. I did have my battery loose, and it slid back and made a connection to one of the components behind the battery, perhaps it damaged it partially. Thanks.

Jay,,my 85 244DL does similar things. It cuts out for a second every so often, and it will stop running at an idle sometimes.It almost always starts on the first turn. I'm thinking it might be the Air Control Valve?, or maybe the Throttle Switch...(I also tried a new fuel pressure regulator,it wasn't the problem,,oh well,at least I now have a spare.)

I was thinking about running a wire out the window to the fuel pump, hooking it to a voltmeter to confirm Im losing voltage. Would those other components result in loss of power to fuel pump or distributor? Ive heard there is some holy grail of a 240 repair manual, saw mention of bentleys?

Yes,,you need a Bentley manual.It's essential and worth the $30 or 40 bucks...dont bother with Haynes or Chilton...You will be dazzled and amazed with the Bentley manual.It will draw you into an intimate relationship with your Volvo...I think FCP Groton has them for about $35 bucks.

Tune-up? Spark plug wires? When were they last replaced?
