Acquired a 1994 945T from a local dealer who had given up on it... 210K, decent car overall...
I thought the problem not serious. At first, at the lot, the car started, I drove it may be 1/4 mile when it started to choke, miss, etc, so I towed it home.
Since then, I can't quite get a decent start. When cold the car starts, barely, and stalls immediately. With each succeeding try the starts get worse (not a battery problem).
The OBD showed a bad O2 sensor which I replaced. The spark plugs get WET, oil was full of gas, may be 1 1/2 quart overfilled, so I changed oil and filter. I found a split in the driver's side intercooler hose which I repaired until I get a new one. The air filter was dirty so I changed it.. I changed the FPR. I cleaned the throttle body. I replaced the idle control valve. I swapped the MAFS with a known good one. I checked the cap and rotor, resealed the distributor while I was at it. I tested the injectors, they spray fine, and do not leak--I even swapped them with some other ones.
So,now I have strong spark, I have well charged battery, I have fuel, too much apparently. I am pretty sure I do not have a massive air leak anymore. I seem to have a RUNNING TOO RICH situation but I am not sure what is causing it... I have not addressed timing yet which would be next. Any suggestions are welcome.

Yes, putting a plug into the wire and cranking, seeing a pretty good spark.

just went thru the same problem....checked and ohmed out all sensors,checked fuel pressures,removed engine harness to inspect for problems,checked timing marks twice....also pulling my hair out..
today i set the crank at TDC and checked mark...good,pulled upper timing cover,cam mark .., rotor pointing in right direction. opened oil cap for visual of overlap@ #1, ears dont look correct as i remember from years ago.....removed cam gear bolt to inspect roll pin, pin is there, removed gear, found pin had sheared and timing was off enough to cause no start and flooding,low compression. Made me feel like an idiot. will put all back together monday but am sure i found problem....

After repairing the hose, did you install new spark plugs?
I bought a 760T about ten years ago that had a bad induction hose. I bought a 760T about ten years ago that wouldn't run after replacing the hose. The spark plugs had become so gas and oil wetted they wouldn't fire right.
Also check the tone ring on the drive plate (flex plate) for damage. Jack the car up and remove the two plastic grills and look at the entire tone ring. If it has been damaged, the car won't run right.

Great. You can use a drill bit to replace the pin. Can't believe the dealer couldn't find this checking the timing.

Hope you're well. Your plan to check timing is sound. We recently had a post reporting a "frozen" tensioner, i.e., one that was well past the end of its service life, that had simply jammed. As a result, the timing belt was loose.
The car on which you work seems to have been neglected. I'd pay particular attention to the timing belt tensioner.
The scarcity of posts reporting failures of engine control units (ECU) suggest that's not a likely cause. The same likely is true with the other computers in these cars (e.g., ignition control unit, ABS control module, and the cruise control module).

Could that RICH CONDITION be caused by an ECU malfunction? At this point I am into the "anything is possible" universe... But it'd help if someone had some concrete ideas...

Coolant temp sensor jumps to mind...

I changed the Coolant Temp Sensor, along with the FI relay, RS Relay.

You changed temp sensor for guage or the rearmost one for FI.
|
|

Actually I haven't gotten around to doing the timing check yet. FREDRU got his problem solved by fixing the pin on the timing gear.
The sensor I changed, among others, is the Engine Temperature Sensor NOT the Gauge Sensor as the gauge is not a problem that I know, at least not yet.

Problem fixed!
The new Turbo hose did the trick; even though I thought I had taped/fixed the rotted hose enough to make it work, apparently that was not the case. So, new Air Filter, plugs, O2 sensor, and the turbo hose did the trick. Not a real AHA moment but success just the same!

Cool! The repair is proof of how important air tight is on turbo system. and don't be discouraged, Your car still needed air filter and plugs as general wear items, and a new O2 sensor doesn't hurt, their life span varies greatly.

The Air Filter was really bad, the plugs were free, the O2 sensor was $18, the Hose was $10. Can't complain, the car is pretty decent overall!
