A WARNING FROM THE EPA-- risk of mental dullness... 90,000 succumb 200

cleaning out a drawer and found this stuffed in the wayback, something that I once clipped from the WashPost...dated 4/19/year?...

RECALL
VOLVO EMMISION WORK ANNOUNCED

Volvo Cars of NA is sending recall notices to 90,000 owners of 1983 and early 1984 Volvos for emissions repair, the Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday.

The Agency said all 1983DL and GL models with 2.3liter four cylinder fuel injected engines and certain early 1984DL and GL models with the same engines are being repaired by the automaker at no charge to customers.

Models with manual transmissions exceed the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon exhaust emission standards; models with automatic transmissions exceed the carbon monoxide standeard, the EPA said.

The automaker will install vacuum valves in the fuel-injection and spark-control system and will modify the engine-temp-sensor circuit on the vehicles with the manual transmission.

The EPA warned that exposure to increased hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emmissions can cause lung and heart problems, fatigue, poor vision and mental dullness.

I remember that (for both of my cars) ... 200

Yes, I remember that fiasco -- I think it was around 1987 or 1988 or so. At the time I had both an '83 and an '84, and the dealer told me that both of them were recalled for the fix.

Well, before that job both cars seemed to run equally well (viz. acceleration), and I took the '84 in first. Well, when it came out of the shop, it never again (until I sold it only last year) seemed as fast (which is a relative term, in an n.a. 240 :-) as it was before the fix.

Needless to say, I never took the '83 in for its "fix" (i.e., apparent castration :-), but eventually it didn't last as long as the '84 (rusted away, because I used that one more in the salty winters to commute to work).

Is the temp sensor thing they mention something to do with a cold start fix I wonder.

I'd like to know what the vacuum valve is and where they put it in line.
