Coil firing intermittently when key in position two and car won't start.

Got an 89 245 wagon that sat neglected for two years. It was started on and off for a few months but at some point it failed to start and there the poor lady sat. I drained all the fuel and went to start it and it was a no go. Here is some of the clues that may or may not help with this mystery. At some point I took out the instrument cluster to use in my car same year same model except mines an auto. I put that cluster back into my girls car, not sure if I was supposed to add or remove any of the dummy lights. Then I put in my fuel pump relay just to see if that was an issue. Now here is the real strange thing. After cranking the car if I leave the ignition on the number two position I hear the fuel pump relay clicking,in the front of the vehicle the coil is firing intermittently, and the air control valve also starts intermittently. All three seem to start and stop at the same time. There were mice in the car at some point but I went through pretty thoroughly and checked all the wires. Now I'm wondering if the computer is bad or maybe something isn't connected right. I have my car to rob parts from but I'm too scared to swap the computer in case something bad happens to mine. Like always any help is really appreciated right now especially since sharing a vehicle is becoming a major drag.

Not sure I fully understand the problem but do you get sprak when cranking? If so, do you get fuel when cranking?

The fuel pump relay is in the cabin so I am not sure if that is what you mean by up front.

Your problem could be as simple as a bad ignition switch (the actual switch, not the part the key goes in) or a dirty 25 AMp fuse in the engine compartment or a fuse with intermitent contact in the fuse panel. All are pretty common but I need to understand what the car is actually doing while cranking.

Checked and cleaned 25 amp fuse on drivers side under hood. The fuel pump relay is clicking in the car by passengers feet. The car gets spark but Since it sparks while cranking and while having the key in position 2, I don't think it is sparking properly. In fact after cranking it and giving up, if I let the key go back to the second position, the car will chug once more after being silent for 5 to 1o seconds which, I figure is the coil sparking again and igniting whatever leftover vapors are in the cylinders. I'm burning my eyes out right now examining the wiring diagrams in a Bentley book. I'll see if the air control valve, coil, and fuel pump relay have any common wires or link to the ignition switch, which I'm sure they must. That's a good idea and place to start. Thanks!

This is realtively common in motorcycles and other cars but I do not know if it is common in the EZK ignition system. The coil discharges when the "points" are open (we have no points but the concept holds). One discharge when the key de-energizes the ignition system is most likely normal. Multiple discharges after the key retur to KPII is absolutley not normal.

You ain't kidding. The chug is definitely related to the other three things (coil, air control valve, and fuel pump relay) going on for no reason. It appears on the wiring diagram that a wire goes from the ignition switch to the fuel pump relay and then from there a wire goes off to an aux air valve, control pressure regulator, and I think the coil. But, doesn't the ecu work by grounding these things at the right time. Or am I completely wrong in that thought.

Also, This may sound stupid but, I cleaned the grounds from the battery to the fire wall and the engine block because I wasn't getting spark as I attached the neg cable to the battery. I am still not getting spark when I tap the connector to the posts. Still get juice when turn the key though.
