940 upper steering column U-Joint source 900 1993

I had my 940 up on the lift today and we noticed some slop in the upper steering U-joint. I've noticed these are readily available for the 240 from various online retailers. Haven't found a source yet for the 940 variant.

Any thoughts? Will I need to drop the rack to get enough slop in the system in order to remove it??

    I'm pretty sure you have to lower the steering rack to get the U joint off, but I think you can leave it all connected and just remove the jacking pad underneath it and the two bolts that connects it up to the big cross-member. Before anything, did you try loosening and tightening the u-joint to see if it gets any tighter?

    I would use a sharp scribe to mark lines on the top and bottom of the u-joint and also make sure not to turn the steering wheel much at all, if you are off one turn you can snap the safety bag wire and the srs light will come on.

    Once it's off I'd look for damage to the inner spline, the steering column itself could be worn out too I suppose, but the U-joint seems like it's made out of softer aluminum. I'm just brainstorming, but maybe you could get away with adding a strip of some aluminum foil to fill the gap of the worn away spline. Best of luck.

      it's not necessary to remove/lower the rack. loosen the pinch bolt at the sliding section and at the upper joint and slide the upper into the lower, remove at the top, then slide out of the lower.
      The upper seems to be one piece with the shaft. I have gotten replacements at the JY for folks, can do that again if someone needs one.

        Oh, doi. I guess I took the steering rack out anyway so I didn't find out that there was enough play to remove it.

        I am not blessed with local JYs loaded with volvos so I may take you up on that.

        my car has 300k so I'm assuming any JY unit will be incrementally better.

        I'll send an email later on tonight.
