AC belt thrown yet again - what might be wrong? 700 1990

Howdy all.

On a 350 mile drive, my AC belt came off yet again. I'll start back at the last time it came off:

I rarely use my AC, since where I live it rarely reaches 75F.

Last year, I drove down to areas where it reaches 100F and it was 95, so I used my AC. It worked as usual (cool, not really that cold) for about half an hour and then slowly worked less and less well and then not at all.
When I arrived, I checked and found that the belt had somehow turned sideways in its channel and was pretty well messed up and warped and so on. So, I replaced it with a new one. I replaced the belt during my trip, and, if I remember right, the AC worked normally on the way home.

I recently replaced my Power steering belt, and in the process had to remove and re-tension my AC belt in the process, so I'm sure it's correct.

Today, I drove basically the same drive and basically the same thing happened. The belt vanished instead this time (maybe it's on my splash pan).

My AC used to have a habit of working for about 30 minutes, then the fan would eventually seem slow down (maybe the vents were opening or something due to low vacuum) and I'd have to turn it off, wait a minute, then turn it back on. This was with an old crummy engine that had seen better days and eventually re-cracked a repaired block.

I've replaced the engine and I wonder if the "new" harmonic balancer on this engine is somehow damaging the belts. The engine/balancer is from a 94 940.

Could this be a sign of a bad compressor or a system that needs new oil? I'm sure a drain, replacement of the orifice tube, and all the o-rings would do it a lot of good, but it's not much of a priority right now. I do use the defrost occasionally, so the system got some exercise (my car runs the AC when it's set to defrost).

Any thoughts or educated guesses would be appreciated. I'll make sure the compressor isn't seized (god forbid) and then go from there. The belt I used was a diehard or something "gatorback" belt. I used to use top cogs, but went for a local option.

Eventually, I'd love to figure out an alternate belt routing to get the PS pump and water pump off of the same belt. I'd rather run the alternator and water pump together.
Is there an alternate routing that does this? Or an alternate routing that would allow using 2 belts to the AC compressor? Is that how it's supposed to be set up? I think my belt routing diagram is gone.

Cheers

mmm... I'm not sure, but looking at the harmonic balancer is good idea.

also, what brand belt is breaking? Most prefer Contitech. I've had Gates belts stretch out in a few months.

Is it possible AC compressor wheel is sticking causing belt to break? I don't know if that's a real problem...

Check for pulley misalignment. If the alternator or A/C pulleys are crooked, then the rubber bushings holding the units to the engine frames are smashed flat. The P/S pump has an aluminum bracket that can wear at the holes and allow similar misalignment. Easy fix in both cases: new rubber bushings or a new bracket from the dealer. Consider buying polyurethane bushings from IPDUSA or FCPGroton since they seem to last longer.

Hmmm. The PS bracket is new (and double-nutted to prevent movement... what a stupid design).

The bushings though.... hmmm. I did replace all of them, but that was 4 or 5 years ago. I wonder if that's it. Thanks!

Do you remember if they were OEM rubber, Aftermarket rubber or poly

I aske because the Uro poly bushings aeem to last a long time but their rubber bushings have often collapsed in under 30K miles from reports on this site.

Aftermarket rubber, I'm pretty sure. Think I got them from FCP. I didn't want to buy the URO bushings at $8 apiece or whatever they were when I bought them.

How many are required again? And it was wicked hot today, I didn't look at the car. Tomorrow.

FCP has them on sale, 4.46 and rockauto, 2.98ea(sold pack of 5, look under electrical, alternator bushings) I thought it was 7 for alternator and a/c compressor. Years ago I did the cheap rubber replacement and called FCP back after 6 months and complained. They cut me a little break on the polys.

I pretty sure the total is 10 bushings...and we have gone round and round about this in more that on a thread earlier:

Alternator = 3 (two on the pivot bolt one on the adjuster arm connection to the block)

Compressor = 4 (I do not remember where all of them are and one is a pain)

              PS = 3

I think the PS is where all the discussion comes up.

The total number of bushing holes in the bracket, at least on my car, is 8.

                3 for the alternator
                5 for the AC compressor
The power steering has no bushings.

                I took pictures :D

                90 740T's B230FT (which is actually a 94 940's L-block :D )

My PS bracket is metal on metal. I wish it had bushings! I replaced that sucker because the hole had elongated. Steel bolt in an aluminum hole... terrible setup. I was actually talking about trying to add steel bushings to the aluminum bracket, but it never happened.

Although... there may be one bushing in the block for the tensioner.... hmmm. I'll try to look tomorrow.

                Thanks for chipping in.

My experience is that only the Volvo rubber bushings last. Aftermarket do not. And the IPD poly bushings are superior to anything else.

At least two years ago when I bought my last set, the IPD poly bushings were URO. I agree completely...and they are super easy to install.
