No start after alternator bushing replacement (detailed experience) 200

The car: '85 245 n/a. wth 413.201 miles

Backstory: squealing belts, could see the alt was out of alignment. Removed the alt and replaced the rubber bushings. Reconnected all wiring as it came apart.

*no battery, cranking, alternator issues prior to replacing the bushings*

Problem:

Reconnected the battery once alternator was reconnected. Started her up...or tried to.

Motor would turn over 1 cycle, then nothing. No clicking of the starter...just progressively a slow turn over of about a 1/4 of a rotation. Key to off...repeat....just a short "ugh" (sound of a weak attempt at the motor turning over)..

Jumped the car to start it. Waited about 5 min to attempt the start...started right up. Ran fine, no lights. Drove 10 miles to work, side roads and highway...no problems. Car sat in parking lot for an hour....went back out to drive it.....just a single "ugh".

Jumps armed it right up. Drive 2 1/2 hours on it....back roads and highways...no problems.


Back to the office just fine. 2 hours later, she needed a jump to get home.


When i got home I checked the battery connections...replaced the clamp bolts with stainless to make sure I had a good, tight connection.

Checked voltage: 14.65

Turn key: "ugh, ugh" nothing

Connected battery charger...just in case....left overnight on a 2amp charge....this morning...a single "ugh"

What am I missing....battery checks out voltage-wise, started works, alternator was working when removed.....

Help please.

    You have probably already identified the problem in your checks. Won't start with fitted battery but will start when jumped with a known good battery. Just because your battery check out with sufficient voltage does not mean that it also has sufficient amperage. I would also argue that 14.65 volts is too high and is indicative of a failing battery. When you jump, are you going terminal to terminal on both positive and negative or are you going positive to positive and negative to engine ground? If the former then you are not likely to have internally corroded cables, but if the latter then check your ground cables. Check both positive and negative voltage drops. It is unlikely that removing, repairing and refitting the alternator caused this problem. Coincidences do happen.

      Certainly true that a battery can have a full compliment of volts but can only supply a handful of amps. Just 8 amps available on the battery I had go down last year. It's an instant fail and usually without any warning. As said, if you take your own battery out and add another and it all works fine you have your answer.

      I am going terminal to terminal.

      I'm going to swap batteries this afternoon with a known good one from my jeep. Hopefully, that'll cure my ailments.

      Ill get the local shop to discharge test the battery to check the CCA of it.

    Only three realistic scenarios I can think of:

    A marginal battery (what is the voltage while attempting to crank)
    A loose or bad battery clamp
    An internally corroded battery cable (no uncommon for that old a 240)

    I am leaning toward the last one because the alternator might have started squealing because of a combination of the extra load from the resistance of the corroded cable and the misalligned pulleys (lots of 240's run for years with collapsed acc bushings on the alternator). Of course this could also indicate a weak battery.

      New rubber bushes so now alternator not earthed to engine? I'm also reminded of posts about the cable that goes across under the front pulley being a potential problem area. Maybe so in this case.

        I don't think the bushings itself are an issue. The bushings are there to support the alt. there is a ground strap to do the grounding.

        The bushings were shot....one of them was almost completely disintegrated. The squealing came on slowly. Most of the time it would squeal initially upon startup, then stop after about 1 1/2 minutes.

        Ill recheck the ground strap on the alt (I did clean all the wiring ends and mating surfaces prior to reconnecting) and other connections.

        The wiring harness was replaced back in 2009 with a new harness.

        Car should still start with a charged battery...does not mean the alternator ground wire is not shot, just not the cause of a failure to start.
