What kind of grommet is/was used on the firewall for the steering column, and what would be a good substitute if I can't get a replacement?

If you are not looking for OE. use hanger wire for "wire bail" and blue foam (camping roll foam) for "gasket"....Worked for me.

That is what I was going to do, look for something in the garage to jimmy rig it, thanks for the advise!

We have used and I think we can get new ones. New ones should be less than $10.00.

If you click on the following link you may see how the steering column is sealed. The foam material is still obtainable through the usual sources. The wire bail secures the foam against the firewall. Note that the foam is not slitted, but will easily stretch over the top of the steering column. Thanks to VolvoBob and others on this forum for showing this to me!!
