Catalytic Converter Query 200 1993

8551606 is supposed to be the catalytic converter for California EGR cars with a spin flange

Davico Dv008 8s converter for non EGR cars, also with the spin flange.

Anyone know the difference.

Thanks,

Marty Wolfson

if it will physically fit the car and you DONT live in california, get the non CA cat and save the $$$
The CA certified cats basically cost more because they have to be certified by the california air resorces board ( CARB ) and have to come with a certificate. For CA residents when they get smog tested , if the cat doesnt have the correct numbers on it and papers, its an immidiate test fail, but for the rest of us, we can use any cheap replacement we can find.

I just put a new downpipe on my 1993 240.

Mine is a Michigan car. No EGR

However, the spin-flange downpipe I ordered was for EGR. The only diiferencr is that it cam with a theadeed bold to plug the threaded hole in the side of the downpipe, where apparently some typt of EGR system tube/pipe attached if your car had EGR

Mine does not. So I plug the hole with the bolt and a copper washer.

The CAT was spin-flange also, with an approx. 2" diameter tapered steel ring to seal the 2 flanges on the downpipe and CAT.

My new CAT had the standard hole for the O2 sensor

I also used high temp silcone fireplace sealer (came in a cauling tube) to help seal the connection where the 2" dia steel ring was.

My CAT was a BOSAL? $150. i think. came with the steel ring and clamps

my downpiper was $108. from O'Riely's auto parts

Suggestion, when you bolt the two pipes together use stailess nuts, SS bolts and SS lock washers, with anti-sieze.

I also replaced the 3 exhauste manifold studs where the downpipe connect to with Stainless steel studs. I bought 50 mm long SS bolts at the hardware and made my own studs.

I also used SS nuts to attach the downpipe (w/ a new gasket) to these 3 SS studs. Also use anti-sieze here as well

You'll be back here in about 2-3 years

Marty, there has to be a difference, though I don't know what it may be. I know the OE Volvo cat for an EGR system is no more expensive than the aftermarket cats, but the proper catalytic converter for our cars is something like $500 from Volvo.

I suspect the internal design is different, or there is less platinum catalyst in an EGR cat.

Whatever the case, I encourage you be the guinea pig and find out for all of us. ;-)

Hi Sean,

I know for certain that the Davico DV008 fits. I've used one on red 93 sedan in 2008, but I hate being a new guinea pig, especially now that I'm getting older and should be wiser even if I'm not. Have to be careful with the nomenclature as one site indicates spin flange (which is what my downpipe and cat have) and other calls it a swivel flange and none of the salesmen are much help.

That's where the BB comes in. Certainly there are wiser guinea pigs around.

Marty

Gents,

I opted for the Davico Dv008. It fit fine and installed with little hassle.

I was reluctant to purchase the spin flange California unit, so I'm afraid someone else will have be the guinea pig on this one. I did find an on-line price of $154.

Happy labor day to all.

Marty

anything that fits will work just fine.
the o2 sensor is the same for both and the location just in front of the cat honeycomb is the same for both.

worst case you could even install the o2 sensor in the header pipe just fore of the cat and it will still work.
