SU carb pistons and domes 444-544

Does anybody know if the damper pistons and domes are interchangeable between the 2-bolt and 3-bolt SU carbs? I have a box of cores and not sure which came from which.

in addition to what others said...

Check needles, best to keep them matched. And late carb pistons have that damn self centering thing going on, which is great when it works, but in my opinion, rarely does..

All S.U. HS6 castings should be machined to the same dimensions and tolerances. Thus all your HS6 parts should be interchangeable. That said, it would be wise to check internal and external dimensions.

Yes, you'll want a well matched pair when checking the piston drop time. Don't clean the inside of the domes with anything abrasive, the fit needs to be tight but smooth as it relies on vacuum to lift the piston.

Yeah, they're machined to have a fairly calibrated air gap/leak around the pistons. There's no seal - so the small gap is pretty critical to maintaining the balance of vacuum in the carb throat to the amount of piston lift.

I'm not sure how much individual hand fitting went on in the SU assembly line, but if it's like anything else from the 60's British automotive industry, there was probably more than you'd like to think.
