What causes high hydrocarbons 200 1985

My 85 240 had high hydrocarbons on the emissions test. What can I do to lower the levels?

Thanks

Low Compression 200 1985

Low compression will result in the fuel not being completely burnt. Engine wear results in low compression.

Rich produces CO. To get high HC usually takes a misfire and that can be lean, or rich. If rich then you'll see high CO too. The O2 sensor will confuse things by compensating the other cylinders so it's a bit of a deal to diagnose.
Spark plugs or a blown intake manifold gasket would be things to look for especially if the idle quality is bad.

Some causes -

Burning oil - how much oil do you have to add per 1000 miles?

Clogged air filter

Car needs a tune up

Oxygen sensor problem

Bad fuel injectors

Clogged engine breather system - flame arrestor, vacuum hoses, etc,

Problem with charcoal canister system.

Bad temp sensor

Engine not fully warmed up - did you take the car for a good drive before testing?

Etc,etc...

Wow, so I guess just about everything.

Car was warmed up thoroughly, air filter changed, don't burn oil, just leak it!
