Generator is out alternator is in... nothing happens 120-130

Hello All,

So I pulled the generator and dropped in the delco. All seemed to be going well and then nothing happened when I went to start her up?..

Seemed simple enough. I'll look at it again after work tonight.

Public transit is costing me a fortune, but all the better when this is done.

Cheers,

Generator is out alternator is in... nothing happens 120-130

    Hello All,

Thanks to everyone for the great input!

Sorry I'm not making sense here... I am getting mixed up more everyday ;)

The instructions I got with the delco said to put a fuse between the alt and the battery. My neighbor also it was necessary to put a fuse to anything going to the battery to prevent an overload. ( He's an engineer who can't be bothered with an old Volvo... if I had a Jag or a triumph he'd be game to help out so he said).
I undid all the damage I caused, and put the generator back on, jumped the battery and it started right up. So Now I am back to square one. I am going to keep at it till i get this right. The alt bolts in nicely... I thought that would be the hard part. I've pasted a link to the photo of my VR and it's wires.

Thanks again for the help and support!

    cheers

Did you wire it up exactly the same as the generator? If so, that's the problem.

You will need to install one of these plugs/adapters:

Also, did you wire up the stock voltage regulator as well? That could also be a problem as the delco is likely internally regulated.

Forgive me if you did these steps already. I'm just throwing some suggestions out there after recently doing a similar conversion on my 444.

Generator is out alternator is in... nothing happens 120-130

      Hello All,

I wired the alternator to #4,the white pigtail wired to terminal 3 for the amp light. I wired a fuse between the white wire off the alt and battery, and then a heavy battery cable direct to battery, which would be the red wire bolted to the back of the alternator is zip tied and connected to the positive terminal to battery. I left the black and red wire on the wheel arch.

Boy just thinking through this gave my head a spin.

      cheers,

Your description doesn't quite make sense...

Did you wire these *to* the terminals on your old voltage regulator?

        Don't do that.

disconnect your old regulator. Put the big wire that once was at terminal 4 directly to the alternator output.

Cut the green wire from terminal 3, and splice it to the white wire from your new alternator.

Strip the small red wire from your new alternator and connect it to the large red wire on the back of the alternator (or to an appropriate fusebox connection, as was mentioned by someone)

What's this about a fuse between the white wire and the battery? And.. ah heck, I don't quite get what you're saying, but it sounds like you may be over-complicating things. Any chance of pictures? Or a drawing/diagram of exactly what you've done?

The old regulator, along with all other associated and now unused wiring go on a shelf in the garage and look pretty until your garage is so full of crap that you end up putting it on ebay or throwing it away :)

If the problem turns out to be a discharged battery you may have a faulty alternator---the Delco can have a fault that will drain the battery. Charge the battery. Use the common test with a test light to see if there's a draw with the alternator hooked up--and not hooked up. Geesh, it's been a long time since I've done this -- someone correct me if I've got it wrong----disconnect the positive terminal and put the test light between the cable and the battery terminal--if the test light illuminates there's a draw somewhere (you may have to remove fuses to eliminate the clock or radio, underhood lamp, etc.). -- Dave
