Plan of Attack Worked! Passed Emissions Test - even with very small hole in header pipe. 200

Yesterday I worked on my "Plan of Attack" to pass the Emissions Test.

link posted here: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1579926/220/240/260/280/plan_attack_update.html

My 1990 240 has always failed the emissions test - every two years. Done the regular maintenance - clean throttle body, etc. to try and get it to pass, but it never did. Been to, at least, 3 mechanics and could never solve the underlying problem and the only way it would pass would be by getting a new cat...

Yesterday, after much Brickboard research, I replaced the Engine Coolant Temp sensor and put a new intake manifold on and today it passed!!!

Here are the numbers....

Test 1 - December 2011

ASM2525 Curb Idle
HC 118 - Fail 96 - Pass
CO% 0.63 - Fail 0.21 - Pass
NO 2312 - Fail

Test 2 - December 2011 - AFTER PUTTING ON A NEW CAT!

ASM2525 Curb Idle
HC 61 - Pass 31 - Pass
CO% 0.10 - Pass 0.00 - Pass
NO 458 - Pass

Test - October 2013 - AFTER new Intake Manifold Gasket and ECT sensor!
SAME cat as 2011

ASM2525 Curb Idle
HC 13 - Pass 46 - Pass
CO% 0.12 - Pass 0.02 - Pass

Love the Brickboard... And, thanks to all posters who helped!

Bricker

Congratulations! I am impressed - many people would chose the known quick-fix rather than dig deeper.

Now your only problem is that the aftermarket cats tend to last only 4 or 5 years. If you get tested every two years, like we do here, you might pass next time, but the time after that you are probably putting a new cat on again. Maybe not; let us know in 4 years. : )

      Thanks Scorron!

My goal was for the car to make it to 25 years, but who knows maybe 27 : )

You must have gotten the idle speed down or they would have been all over you on that, I think?

    Was it the IAC VALVE?

      I'm not sure...

I didn't make any idle adjustments... I don't even know how to.

I thought you were the one with the high idle after putting it in park?
