Hey folks,

I installed a tach in my 1980 242 with help from Art and all, and I want to make sure it's reading properly. My father-in-law has an older tach/dwell/ test meter, but I don't know where to connect the leads. At the red/white wire leaving the coil? If so, at least one meter is WAY off. Any ideas?

When my car is set to 900 RPM idle on its own tach, it feels slow and chuggy at idle. Using his meter connected at the red/white coil wire it revs way high. All suggestions welcome.

the meter should have 2 leads with - red and black. these connect to the postive and neg terminals on the battery...red being positive..

The other clamp-like lead goes around the #1 spark plug wire. anywhere along the wire. It should also be marked showing "this side toward plug"

As noted, the meter will have a switch for 4, 6, 8 cylinders. Set it to 4.

the tac that you installed is usually not very good at reading low revs...like for setting the idle...it's more reliable when driving at speed and running thru the gears.

It's a Stewart-Warner, with multiple scales (no switch) and tach/dwell/point mode selectable via switch.

It only has two leads, however. One black and one red.

Red lead goes to the negative side of your coil. It should be stamped on the coil. Black goes to any good ground.

The old Sears dwell/tach that I have has scales for 4, 6, or 8 cylinders, do you have multiple scales or some kind of switch that selects the number of cylinders?
