Ran great.....ran rough...high idle....no start....all in 10 minutes 200

1987 N/A 245. A friend and myself picked this one up to fix up and sell. I've actually contemplated keeping it as its a nice slick top that ran great...till this afternoon.

Had it running great till I tried to move it to paint the lower trim.cranked to a rough idle....bucking and surging....got it over and put it into park...the idle went to 1500....then to 2000. Ran great...smooth as silk....but at 2000 rpm.

Give it gas and it would rev...and then drop back to 2000rpm. Ran it for 10 minutes (trying to get it warm and make sure thermostat was working and such). Turned it off and restarted with a stumble then idled at 1000rpm for 15 seconds then went to 2000rpms.

Turned it off again....and now no start.

I've checked: fuel pump/relay is good, have spark, checked the injectors with test light, fuel is at the rail, 25amp fuse is good, timing belt is good, rotor is good. I unplugged the maf and no change...still no start.

The throttle returns to its stop, so it's not that it's stuck giving gas.

Car ra n fine this morning. Did nothing to the fuel system today.

Help! Any ideas?

Thanks!

Chris

      Final update...I hope.

Double checked the fuel system, spark, O2 sensors....all was good.

Checked timing and seemed to be too advanced...firing just after TDC. Pulled the timing belt and checked the alignment...replaced with new belt....buttoned her back up. Fired her up and idle was down to 1250-ish. Grounded out the IAC and adjusted the idle to 750....and she purrs...

We couldn't get the idle down before...I guess it was just too advanced. She runs great now...very responsive to gas and the exhaust temps are back to normal range.

She runs so good I briefly contemplated selling my blue wagon and keeping this one....but I like the blu better as its not as common of a color.

Thanks for the help guys in figuring this out.

Review: timing was off, replaced belt/adjusted gears to marks, and adjusted idle to 750

OK...not fixed. We thought we had fixed the issue...but its still around.

Can someone help me figure out what we have missed:

Cleaned injectors, checked the spray...all OK

Idle Air Control seems to be working based on shaking it (rattles as was told it would)...cleaned it best I could.

      Cleaned throttle body

Checked all vacuum lines we could find. Visual checks as well as spraying carb cleaner to see if we get any spikes in revs.

      replaced fuel filter

replaced temp sensor under intake rail while we have the throttle body off.

      new plugs and wires...just because

Unplugged MAF...ran worse...reconnected...ran as it did before.

So...what am I missing? The fuel pump relay is working as the pumps are working...but could it still be bad? We disconnected the O2 sensor and it didnt like that...plugged it back and it ran great, just high idle.

This is frustrating....this car runs so good....no misses, hiccups...but idles at 2k rpms.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks!

25 amp fuse may look good but corrosion at the + battery connection and the fuse holder may be the problem. Good idea to replace the holder with a marine grade water proof unit.

Cap and rotor are cheap and have caused many no starts, get Bosch parts.

There is an open connector near or under the PS resevoir or battery, blue wire and blue/white wire if i recall correctly? Grounding the blue/white wire will eliminate the IAC motor. This is used to adjust the idle with the black knob on the throttle body, but the idle air control motor must be taken out of the loop first by grounding it out. There is a great write up here dealing with idle issues. http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/953480/740/760/780/stuff_run_intake.html

Tear into the idle air control valve and any associated hoses!

It was running and now it has come up for air and it's getting a big mouth full, I think?

We will look at that this afternoon. It's also been suggested that we check the injectors to see if they are clogged....that maybe it's running lean, compensating by gulping air. Not sure on that theory, but ill try anything at this point.

We did run sea foam in the tank....maybe they are clogged.

We've got to get her running at all to check the idle...
