Overfilling M47 (or any) manual transmission can cause seals to fail?

Folks,

Can overfilling the Volvo M47 and M47 II, or any RWD Volvo manual transmission you may overfill, may cause the seals to fail?

Sort of sundry, yet not really ... 10W30 motor oil in that M47 II? (Should get vvpete's attention here). I think it is mineral 10W30. Not sure.

I'll indicate why in a subsequent post if any replies to this thread starter. The whole matter has me, uh, well, hmmm, disgruntled.

Like Grumpy Cat meme disgruntled. In other words, NO.

Thank you. Happy Holidays, everyone, you, and all of yours, and your RWD Volvos.

cheers,

Grumpy Cat meme Advocate.

How overfilled are you talking about?

If the transmission were severely over filled so that all air was pushed out - expansion might create a condition called liquid filled and liquids do not compress - this would create a situation where the seals would be subjected to high pressure and fail for sure.

Overfilled to something less than 2 litres, the reason is to keep oil in the top bearing of early M47's. I have never had a problem with leaking since I did it maybe 8 years ago.
To overfill you raise the left side of the car as high as you can get it on jack stands and fill the trans until the oil comes out of the fill hole. This probably only gets and extra 4 to 6 ounces of fluid in the trans but enough to keep the upper bearing in oil.

I overfilled mine about 8 years ago and have had no leaks or issues?

What kind of oil did you use?

I used Redline MTL, probably should have used OEM Volvo.

This is a Volvo mechanic for some 35 years at a premier city center import auto repair facility.

Unsure if synthetic or mineral 10W30.

Yeah, and I have 3 litres of of the Redline as specified for the M47 II. Yet they did not use it, claiming the transmission was old.

The transmission in this 1991 240 sedan has about 153k miles and never a problem.

Well I have learned on the BB that it is synthetic from the factory and likely much better than the MTL I replaced it with. If I do it again I will get the recommended Volvo brand.
