1974 164E rear springs 140-160

Hi All,
My 164 is sagging in the rear on the lefthand side. I had planned on replacing trailing arm and panhard rod bushings so I'll replace rear coil springs at the same time. My question is can I use coil springs from a '75 up 240? I saw a post awhile back that someone had used 240 rear springs on a 1972 145. From the post it looks like the mounting is different on the upper part of the coil, but I am wondering if you change the mounting over from the '75 up 240 will they fit/work?
As always, thanks in advance. This is a great source for older Volvos.

Matt--using the 240 springs is an easy conversion. I ran 245 rear springs in my 144 for many years till I made a parts swap to obtain lowering springs. The 240 upper mount (inverted cone) bolts to the frame rail the same way the closed upper loop on the 140/160 spring mounts. You just have to slip an extension with a socket (I think 14mm bolt head) up into the cone after removing the spring--the bolt should unscrew without any drama. I think the upper bolt on the '74 164 would be a fractional size -- the 240's is metric -- be sure to compare the bolts--use the ones that came off the 164. -- Dave

I thought 74 144/164 rear spring assemblies where the same as early 244 with the exception of metric fasteners. I convert my early cars to late 244 style springs with early short wheelbase conrol arms. Gives a good boost to the 164's handling less plough understeer from the giant lump up front + more traction at the rear.

I did the exact same thing -- I used the springs and mount from the 245 and everything just mounted up exactly as expected. A nice cheap junkyard upgrade.

      This was 1970 164 / mid 80s 245

Other stuff that works well 240 140 include:

      door weather stripping
      door strike plates (early 240s)
under seat spring / wire grid (replaces webbing)

since you've got a 74 you can probably also use carpets as well.

      Hi Dave,
That's a big help and a relief to know I can use them and save a few bucks. It sounds easy enough to swap out. I'm not looking forward to replacing the trailing arm bushings. I will be taking the window motors as well and maybe the heater assembly.
      Thanks again,
      Matt
