B230ft Acceleration Problems 900 1991

Hi,
When I try to accelerate any more than very gently, the engine hesitates and loses power. The idle is smooth and steady. When I accelerate gently the engine will rev to all rpms normally. It's just when I hit the gas the power falls off abruptly. If I keep my foot in it, the car begins to misfire/backfire. What could it be?

It was a distributor flooded with oil. Problem solved.

      Dear bricker4ever,

Hope you're well. Not so fast!! If the distributor was "flooded with oil", that suggests oil is being forced past the rear cam seal. If that's so, there's something amiss with the crankcase ventilation system. Over-pressure suggests that the flame trap - and possibly the oil trap - are clogged. Check these ASAP.

I'd also check inside the timing belt cover, to see if oil has been forced past the front seals. An oil-wet timing belt will fail prematurely. While no engine damage results, the car stops, making you a pedestrian. If there's oil inside the timing case, change the timing belt. Oil weakens rubber just as saltwater corrodes steel.

See the site's FAQs for instructions on cleaning the flame trap and oil trap. According to Volvo VADIS - the superseded dealer parts/service database - the B230FT engine used in the 1991 models has a crankcase ventilation system that closely resemble those in later 940s.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

That's a classic symptom of a massive airleak somewhere. My 740 turbo did that when the rubber boot between (after the) intercooler and metal intake tube was ruptured. Inspect all of your intake hoses. Look for a hole or for one that's not fully seated. You can check by holding up the tubes, covering the end with your hand and looking into it. This works best when you're in the shade and can point it at something bright (like a distant garage-door). You're looking for light coming into the tube.

    Good luck!

Look inside the male connector to the mass air sensor to make sure that none of the pins have been pushed out of place.

This is one of the few connectors that are unplugged on a regular basis during service.

Does the car accelerate normally in reverse? This is what happened to my car!

It would barely accelerate in drive, but go fine in reverse.I found that the wiring to the sensor pulled on the plug when I accelerated and a pin that was pushed back lost connection.
