Wow, I just had to sit there a minute, and look at the odometer.
I have friends and co-workers who are in debt, and change cars like underwear, and this car still runs smoothly, just like when she was new.
This car has never had a lien on it, and with the ease of maintenance, has been a gift, as far as saving money.
I'm half way to my next goal of reaching 400,000 miles.
That's all, just reflecting on what a great car this has been.

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 350,000 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

I'm visiting from the 740 . Mileage wise my car is young, with only 198k miles and runs like a charm!
Congrats to everyone with high mileage .

This post and the ones below make me very happy. I just bought a '99 s70 (my first Volvo) with 225,000 miles. When I called the mechanic to schedule a time to change the timing belt and water pump, he acted like it would the last time my 'new' car would ever see the shop. I love this car, I have never been happier with a car, and I plan to drive it through many more timing belts!

I'll crack open a cold beer for you. Congratulations. Just think, only 50K or one timing belt change to 400K.

I'm just about to hit 340,000.
I also think it's silly to spend so much money on changing cars so often. And it's better for the environment in terms of landfill space and raw materials.

Hi Guys
Made 544000 miles here in the UK
Doing about 28k a year
Last engine 494k.
Got this 245GL with a 1986cc engine which you did'nt have to suffer from.
Now running a B230 now on liquid petroleum gas (LPG) at 69.9 pence per litre. Gives about 42mpg.
I do like the double filtration on the oil. Takes the grit down
from 16 micron to 2 micron. Pistons and bores love it.
Got up up to 150k on one oil change after oil analysis. Only way forward.
Keep these red block on the road

Congrats!!! My '96 850 (5 spd manual) wagon has approx. 325K miles on her (odometer died a year ago). Despite a little rust, no instrument panel lights, a rear bumper that's held in place by the hitch, check-engine and ABS warning lights ON, the dead odometer, and a little more-than-usual P/S fluid and oil consumption, SHE's running STRONG after all these years. 'Hope to hang on to her a little longer. Most comfortable car I have ever been in !!!

Congrats. My 240 has 338,000 miles and, other than rust, is in great condition. I also wonder about other people who "need" a new car every three years, but to each his/her own. I'll take my payment-free, easy to work on, reliable, nobody-wants-to-steal-it old brick over a monthly car payment, I can't figure this thing out, why is the check engine light on again, I need a car alarm vehicle any day.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
It's crazy how people spend money on cars. I have two wagons, an 88 and a 90 true 5 speed. The cost of operating one of these, when you do you own repair and maintenance, is unbelievably inexpensive and they drive great!
Now that they are "cool" I just drive around and pretend I am hip (I am 51, father of two, like the Eagles and the Steve Miller Band, I'm pretty sure I'm not hip).

Congrats. Been there done that and every milestone is just as exciting. My '86 240 sedan reached 504,602 miles on it before it was buried into a tree at 45mph giving its life for mine. I'm now driving my wife's '04 XC70 and got her a '10 XC60. There's nothing better that a Volvo for life.

Hi Bob,
I don't see your email address. And I meant to tell you...
FYI. You can use this drawing to make your differential module covers for your XC70 & XC60. It protects the module from road debris and going bad like 850/v70 ABS module. Also, check the sunroof drain holes on your wife car. My friend's car had a water leak, his car was only 4 months old when it happened. He did not know until he saw frozen water marks by foot well cover; think of our 240 fuse box location. Good luck.

PS;
Besides the cover, you need these following parts.
2 spacers that's 5/8" high
2 longer machine screws that's 2-3/8" long + washers

Congratulations! Nice to hear, and you know you can always come to Brickboard to cheer you on to fix it instead of ditch it.... :-)

Congrats! My parents just gave me their 93 245 Classic with 77,600 miles which I hope to take above 340,000 mile - the mileage on my 89 740. Could you tell me your OCI, brand, and other intervals please? Many thanks.

i like to read longevity stories like in this thread. i have had a 92 245 with 231k which is in very good condition. been running it for 3 years so far. this forum remains extremely useful and friendly. i have noticed the following about volvos. the dealers are some of the worst superchargers i have seen . dealers in general are like this but volvo parts and dealer labor are worse. the later volvos(post 240 and 740) do not have the durability of the rwd models. i have heard this from many owners of late model volvos. the main problem with the 240/740 models seems to be unnecessarily complicated and expensive to repair electrics. seems volvo wants to capitalize on the advertising value of the 240 reputation without engineering a worthy replacement version of that model. the rwd volvo never should have been discontinued. getting certain parts can be a long journey. it is the rare junkyard that has any 240s in it. for a car that was classified as a luxury or upscale car in the cadillac category, it is amazing how poorly designed the plastic parts are. they actually crumble like clay. never saw that in cheap fords or plymouths. heres a vexatious question for my fellow DIYers and old volvo fans. what new car would you buy today if you wanted 240 reliability, durability , economy and ease of repair?........hmmmmmm your silence is deafening. keep up the good work. regards oldduke

Sorry Oldduke your age is really showing when you say electrics electronics
are complex on 240(I am 61 myself, have owned mopar slant sixes, went Volvo slant 4, now going BMW slant six).My personal experience over 30 yrs of 240 ownership has made me think these are the easiest to maintain electronics,
especialy the LH 2.4 and what wiring issues I get are usually due to salt, are basic wiring fixes.I don't see why people are replacing them with FWD Volvos apart from increased repair costs fwd is not the same breed of car.(MY replacement program involves BMWs, handling is everything an experienced RWD
Volvo driver would find completely at home AND intoxicating ,NOW! we can say electronics are complex.)

hello rene and rolls- am not a sage yet on the 240. only have 3 years in and 10k. the 92 has been a very durable and reliable tank. used to be a sage on the slantsix(40 years) and while the 240 is excellent it is more complicated than the valiants and aspens i was used to. does seem all makes and models have the problem of corrosion and salt interference. the electronic ignition on the sl6 could always be trouble shooted by trial and error usually with a spare part known to be good. spare known good sl6 ecus, voltage regulators , distributors , alternators , ignition wires , coils etc. would always pinpoint a problem cause and quickly resolve it . parts were always cheaply available at the napa or yard. but most sl6 vehicles rusted to hell . know this b/c i looked for one for 2 years found some with automatic but dont like that in any used car. can easily do a manual trans and clutch r and r on a sl6. gave up and found my 92 245. but the 245 has the hellacious relays which are tough to diagnose and find when you have an electrical gremlin. my 245 has the 5 spd manual which looks easy enough to fix. that was tough to find too. only downside to driving the 245 is slow takefoff from a light which has caused me to receive many bad words and hand gestures . lucky im not a sensitive guy or my feelings would be hurt. never had that problem with the sl6s and a manual trans. have you had the highly malodorous experience yet of r and r the blower motor? dealer soaked a pal 800 for that here. what would you consider the 3 worst diagnostic or repair jobs on the 240(full 5 F job). thanks tons oldduke

Congrats!
Makes me think whether my 1990 244DL would have made 350k or 400k (maybe it has?). I sold her after she reached 300K and the drivetrain was still going strong. It was the other stuff that was driving me crazy...:)
