starter stays engaged in cold temps. 92 740 automatic regina 700

Hey to all, I have a problem with starter staying engaged with temps. below 30 degrees outside. The problem has been narrowed down to the area of the starter meshing with the ring gear. With the switch wire disconnected at the starter and a hand held starter button connected to the terminal the starter still stays engaged. The flywheel has no rust on the gear teeth. Three starters all do the same thing. One starter was a Napa rebuild and the other two were known good ones. When the temps. are around 40 degrees outside, everything works fine. The car was bought in Florida so I can`t tell ya the whole history of the car. After measuring the flywheel it seems to be in the proper location compared with my other B-230`s. Not sure if the flywheel has ever been changed. The teeth are in perfect shape as far as wear is concerned. Thanks for any input on this mind boggling problem. Maybe someone has seen this problem before. Larry

Hey to all, One thing I did was to bypass any ignition switch problems by disconnecting the starter switch wire and attaching the hand held starter button to the + battery terminal and the other end to the switch side of the starter solenoid. Thanks for any help. Larry

Since it's happened with so many starters ... it's either an incredibly common and overlooked problem, or it's not the starter.

I would replace the starter cables and make sure the key isn't sticking a little too close to KP3. A heavy keyring makes that much more likely.

    Good luck!

....and when the key sticks in the start position , k3 , you won't be able to shift out of park and the srs light stays on!

Can't shift out of park? I haven't experienced that, but SRS light and no radio or fan I definitely had happen.

Sorry it took a while to get back. The used starter had been gone over and actually two of them were the expensive rebuilds one from Napa and the other was 108.00 from Bap Geon. I was thinking the same thing with it being the starter. As I understand the way the starter functions is that 12 volts pushes the starter bendix out and the spring returns the bendix. The new battery from my 940 was used with no difference. The engine turns over at the proper speed(cold or hot). This has been a really strange problem that would normally seem like an easy fix. Come to think of it I even tried a good old style Bosch starter because they are really good starters. That makes four starters with the same results. The two used starters came from good running engines. Thanks for any help! Larry

12 volts pushes the starter gear into the flywheel, hard - the SPEED of the gear snaps it back along the helix.

The engine running creates the SPEED as the flywheel now spins much faster than it did when the engine was cranking.

The spring keeps the starter gear from hitting the flywheel when the engine is running.

I had a '56 Ford that would start instantly - except if the battery was a bit low - then it would not start at all. This is why I suspect a voltage problem.

Low voltage could be an issue if you tried three starters.

When cold, the starter may not spin fast enough to help the Bendix release.

Look for voltage drops in the starter wiring or measure how many volts you have at the battery, and how many get to the starter.

Just trying to think out of the box.

James, in or out of the box, you could be right. I had a similar prob w an erratic starter. Put in known good one - same.
When it got deeper into winter and prob was worse, I bought a new battery. No more starter problems. The old batt was good enuf for all it had to do except its big job - STARTER MOTOR.

It is not the ring gear. It's either the solenoid sticking or the mechanical linkage that the solenoid pushes/pulls on is hanging up. Don't recall if starter is a Bosch unit, but rebuilds are dicey unless you know the shop. You can remove and disassemble solenoid/linkage and make sure is works as intended. Bench test or bring to an automotive electrical shop (not Autozone) to have tested/repaired. Good luck.
