1992 745 regina fuel pump question 700

I want to replace the fuel pump with just the pump and not the whole assembly. I currently have a pump on there that was replaced by previous owner who did not know jack. I suspect he used the wrong pump because I had to add a universal check valve to the system to get the car to start correctly ( would not hold residual psi). Worked great but now the pump is failing, Probably used an Airtex pump or similar. The gas gauge sender had to be twisted and aligned for the gauge to work. I would like to know what pump to use that has the check valve built in like the original AC pumps for the Regina`s. Has anyone done this with good lasting results without paying the high price for the whole assembly. I read somewhere, maybe turbobricks that there is a high performance Walbro pump that can be bought off E-bay but It does not say it has a check valve built in. Thanks for any and all help. Larry

Sounds like you're chasing wild geese, because the Regina pump does not have a check valve. I have purposely bled my Regina 940 down to 0 psi with scarcely any effect on starting.

Here's what the Regina green book service manual has to say about "Residual Pressure":

The pressure should drop below 200 kPa (29 psi) in less than 20 minutes.

It goes on to say the if the pressure drops too quickly to check for leaking injectors or cold start valve — and if they are OK to "test with a new pressure regulator".

FWIW, to test this I once purposely bled my Regina 940 down to 0 psi, and noticed scarcely any effect on starting.

I did this exact project about a year back, for some reason I didn't think the oem one was available, but the one I got from FCP looked the part. Put it in, soldered it up and it's been fine. I guess time will tell.

This is in-tank pump? I don't think there is a check-valve at that pump, only the main pump has check-valve.

Airtex has worked well for in-tank pumps for several BB users. It's not as critical as main pump. For main pump use Bosch. See IPD's website to get an idea of what's available for your specific car.

I'm not sure if regina requires soldering, my 1986 didn't. FAQ has decent install instructions.

This Regina system only has one in tank pump with built in check valve. I wish it was the Bosch set up. When these systems don`t work right its a little difficult to tune. Larry

ahh... darn... soldering too! Search turbobricks, like you mentioned, they do a lot of aftermarket experimenting and have a better idea of the duds...

(do you know the google search trick? "site:turbobricks.com" then search terms)

I had to solder mine in place though some aftermarket types do provide a crimp retrofit. I took some pics of my last repair , hopefully I can find them should you need to see what it looks like. There is a rubber shroud that should be with the pump to reduce vibration

I have always used oem for replacement. You need to be able to solder the connections though.

Can you buy just the pump itself without the sender assembly?
