A failed Clutch MC or something else? 120-130

Hello All,

I replaced my 4th failed clutch slave cylinder in as many years....
The job went easily enough aside from one if the mounting bolts refused to bolt flush as it once had. After bleeding the system, I took the car for a spin. After going three blocks the clutch peddle went soft and I couldn't shit.. I rolled home. After opening the hood, the lid and the body of the clutch MC was soaked in fluid, and I found the fresh fluid inside had become milky, but the clutch MC was rather full. The clutch MC was replaced with new about five years ago.

It's dark now.so I'll start tomorrow... Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

What type of brake fluid are you using, DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5, or some non-glycol based fluid?

      Hello Eric,

oddly it says dot 3 & 4. Ideally I was just using it.for a flush. I have a bottle of dot 5 that was for the final fill up.

      cheers

Not odd at all. My preferred clutch and brake fluid is Castrol which also is DOT 3 and DOT 4 compatible. You can use DOT 4 in a DOT 3 system. But you shouldn't use DOT 3 in a DOT 4 only system.

In case you did not know, you can not mix DOT 5 with anything else.

To use DOT 5 you have to completely clean and I mean completely clean the entire system of any of the residual lower grade fluid. And this requires removing, disassmebling and cleaning y of the calipers, wheel cylinders and proportioning valve if equipped and cleaning the hard and flex lines thoroughly.

I don't recommend using anything but Castrol brake fluid in either the brake or the clutch systems.

But I know others feel differently and they think DOT 5 is best. But I think DOT 5 should only be used in race cars and in high humidity areas.

Good ole Walrus (George Downs)used to regale us with stories of the time he spent down in Panama and the problems he experienced with the high humidity and the saving graces of fully synthetic non-hygroscopic brake fluid before he passed.

        Walrus, you are still missed!

          You said it Eric,

George was a good man. Kind as they come. In the 15 years I've had my 120, among others, I learned so much from him.He answered questions I didn't know I had. Making a trip to his neck of the woods was something I had planned. to do.I think of him.often. Although we never met, I felt I knew him well. I am one of countless people he shared his kindness with

          Thanks Eric,

          Nicely said, Eric!

DOT 4. I've never had a problem with it. Never felt a need for anything better.

George is not 'still' missed. He will always be missed.

          And never forgotten.

I will take a wild stab and say u needed to bleed it better and a big bubble climbed upp the line a d overflowed the mc as well as giving u soft pedal while it was in the mc....try rebleeding with an assistant.....
Good ol George...he is missed....I had hoped to visit him on my next big trip....but the big trips are further apart these days with all the kids etc....
