Switching to Zerex G-05 coolant - Flush questions 700 1990

Howdy folks.

I'm doing my heater core (so much fun, let me tell you :P It's actually not that bad).

In the process, since I have stop-leak in my old coolant and it's a few years old, I want to switch to Zerez G-05. I've got a couple questions.

1) What's the actual coolant capacity of the system? Is it really 10 quarts? I think it was more like 7-8 from past work on the car.

2) Do I really need to run prestone coolant flush and do a full heat/cool cycle before draining it? Can I just pull out the thermostat and run the engine on tap water for 5 minutes to clean it out? Then do another rinse (once it's cool) and run and finally install the new coolant and distilled water.

3) I'm in an apartment complex. Does anybody have recommendations on keeping coolant spillage to a minimum? I know about the block drain, but the lower rad hose makes a mess. I looked into ethylene glycol degradation, and what I found said in 1-3 days most is broken down in the dirt. The actual coolant I'm going to capture and drain. What do I need to do with regards to the flush-water?

Cheers!

At the risk of asking a really dumb question, is there any dire consequence if you do not get all of the old coolant out?

actually-no. the g05 has no phosphates and the ethylene glycol does but otherwise they're very close. now DEXCOOL and similar products will react with anything but water, including air. that would have to be flushed to just clear water before adding coolant. good luck, chuck.

hi- I've done this task several time. The best is to use a bucket that fits unser the lower hose connection. Leave it there for a few hours if you can. When you flush the system use good clean water- the trouble with hose water is that the minerals attach to the metal in the block and radiator so use filtered water if possible.
I kept the water in the engine for a while as I drove around town. It cleanses the acid residue from the flush out of the block.
Place the used anti-freeze in the original container if U still have it- otherwise in one or two of the bottled water containers.
You will need about 7 liters of antifreeze 50/50 using distilled water. My experience with some anti-freeze compounds is that they go "sour" after a while and algae starts to build up in the system. so use a good antifreeze compound.

Well if your putting in a new heater core, you might as well make it last as long as possible.
Use A gallon of G-05 and a gallon of "distilled" water.

NEVER use tap water to mix antifreeze with coolant.

Good = Distilled Water. Available evberywhere in gallon milk jogs like at WAL*MART.
      Better - Demineralized Water.
      Best - Deionized Water.

At around 1$ per distilled water bottled gallon, you can rinse through the upper radiator hose, with temp lever set to hot, and a catch pan under the engine block coolant jacket drain tap under the #4 exhaust runner.

Use a internal diameter 1/2" or 7/16" hose about a foot or two long.

Really best not to let antifreeze coolant spill anywhere. It does break down when exposed to air after some time, yet not after domestic animals try to consume it. Glycol antifreeze last much longer is spilled into water bodies like sewers and streams.

      cheers,

      Mac Dud.

The specs say 10 quarts but I never seem to get that much out. I suspect normally there is extra left in the heater core and other places that may not drain well.

If changing / flushing: I drain, fill with water, run for a while with water, drain, add 5 qts Zerex, then fill the rest with water.

By the way if you want stock up on zerex G05, Zoro tools has it for $12.59. Free shipping for $75 and plus google a code for $15 off.

8 quarts is about what I get out with a simple draining. That makes it easy to get a 50/50 mix by simply adding a gallon of antifreeze and a gallon of water.

To get as much as possible out of the system I use the block drain and then loosen the lower radiator hose at the waterpump. There is no way around some spillage but with the lower hose still connected to the radiator you have some control over directing the flow as you lower the hose.

Several buckets of water to flush the area of any spill will dilute any reasonable spillage enough not to be a danger to peoples pets licking up undiluted coolant.

Now that the weather is moderate (at least in my part of the world) I would simple fill the system with water and drive the car. Remember to move the heater control to heat to flush the core. At the end of the day drain the system via the block drain. Refill the system and drive for a day and once again drain the system.

A gallon of G-05 and a gallon of water should get you close to a 50/50 mix of coolant in the system.

Ah, all right sounds good. My big problem is always spilling coolant from the lower hose.

What do you do with the rinse water?

I reuse disposable aluminum turkey roaster pans to catch unpredictable spills. They cover a good area of probable run off.

I hate to admit it but I don't catch the rinse water.
