Has anyone tried to compress the spring on the Adjuster to pull the cables off? I would like to replace only the adjustment knob

I put 300+K miles on my car and one idiot does an inspection and bends the Adjuster. It functions but the Adjuster knob faces way up. drives me nuts.
I have an entire spare mirror but honestly, the original one has less scratches on it.
