volvo 240 A/C just quit suddenly 200 1988

Hello, Have an 88 240, it has r134a fitting later compressor, and that part where you can look though a small glass hole near the radiator has been replaced. drove car to walmart dropped someone off, a/c was working great in fact too cold so i dialed the switch back a bit. came home, went to pick person up 30 minutes later and nothing, a/c does not work, I wouldn't think a charge would disappear that quick. normally if you have the switch to barely on you would at least hear the blower fan run real faint I don't hear that, I don't hear the normal clicks, I also checked the number 12 fuse. Iam just not sure where to go next.

    Sure sounds electrical to me.

You might want to check the last thing you touched.

In most cases a wire slips off the back of that thermostat you turned or you lost a power connection that comes through a 3-5 second delay relay that is notorious for dying like that.

My '86 HAD one. I jumped the terminal at the socket of the connector and tossed that baby deep into a trash bucket!

It was located down low on the right side behind the passenger console panel.
I think it clipped to a support rail there.

Yes, as Phil says, electrical. In the '88 the 10 second delay starts with ignition on, as sensed through the wire from fuse 12. If you're sure fuse 12 is supplying current (power windows work) then my advice is to check the microswitch on the back of the thermostat. That is responsible for getting the relay to close which supplies fuse 12 current to the clutch and heater fan low speed setting. I've heard they fall apart, and it has happened to me too.

If not the microswitch, then take the cover off of the delay relay and reflow the solder over the circuit board foil where the actual relay is. You'll most likely see fine cracks around the pins.

Thank you everyone, I did order the a/c relay put that in and it seems to have restored operation, also while I had things apart I went to cleanflametrap and followed the directions for removing the Temp Board so now I have a working temperature gauge! again thanks you guys rock!

Wow Art, I though it only controlled the compressor clutch since that is what throws a load on the engine right away.
The fans operation surprised me! A whole ten seconds eh?

Guess that's what bench work will get you, more Knowledge!

1st thing to check does the clutch engage on the compressor? If not check the that the black ground wire has not broken off, trace from compressor to engine block. 2nd low on freon and needs a charge and or you have a leak somewhere. Bubbles in the collector window usually means air in the system
