Split driveshaft 200 1991

Greetings everyone, just but a 91 240 to go along with my 93 940. Has a few issues one serious one is the rubber ring surrounding the carrier bearing on the driveshaft is bad,the spring is out of it. The loop that holds the ring in has two bolts that attach to the underside of the car. Now the fact of the car being over 20 years old and in New York State,my question is how subsectical are those bolts/holes to stripping ? Just want to know if I'm getting into a potential can of worms when I drop the driveshaft and rubber ring out of there. I have researched the archives and the job looks straight forward, once you drop it and separate it.

    Hi,

Our 92 245 spent most of it's life in upstate New York. I have done a fair amount of work to it (including removing the supports at the back of the transmission) and haven't had anything strip out.

    Every car is different though.

Just spray the bolts down with Pb Blaster, Kroil, etc. and apply anti seize on re installation.

I'm nervous now that there are supposed to be two more bolts in that loop (yes 13 is the one I mean) I will soak the heck out of the two and hope someone forgot them and didn't leave them broken off in there.

In a worst case scenario you can access the fixed nuts under the carpet on the tunnel. If needed you could drill through the old ones if the two missing bolts turn out to be missing because their broken. More likely they got forgotten--or lost as has been suggested. -- Dave

I generally haven't had any problem removing these bolts on any of our 240s. The threads go up into the passenger compartment and therefore should not be exposed to salt or moisture. I am in the chicago area so my cars are fairly rusty but these bolts always come out clean.

By, "the loop," I presume you mean item 13 at upper left in the picture.

Two bolts on each side, right? As Phil suggests, if there are only two bolts total then two are missing.

I would sooner expect to break one of these than strip it. If the ones that are present look really rusty I would replace them too.

If two bolts are missing the threads in the body are probably cruddy. I would clean them up.

How's the rubber dust boot (item 16)?

I would hope I can say, Darn harder to strip out two of them, than leave them out!

The last person to work on it may have been working on his back in a loosely graveled driveway?

He found out the difference between aggregate and aggravation!
