940 wagon power driver's seat button 900 1993

Good friends of mine just got a free 940 wagon for their college age daughter and they are having problems with the one switch that moves the driver's seat forward and backward.

The switch seems to work with all the other functions, up, down, back lumbar.
Just wont' move forward or backward which really is the more critical fucntion.
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong here?

"...free 940 wagon for their college age daughter..." What could go wrong?

    There are several possibilities:
Something blocking the track. Does the switch seem to engage, hear a click?
    That motor failed, (rare).
Cable pulled out, but if the seat doesn't move at all, not likely.
The seat controller even though they rarely fail in this fashion.

I believe this car has a seat diagnostic. See the FAQ for codes.

      tedv,
Sorry for my ignorance, but can you show me where that FAQ section is?
      Where is the link?

        Dear Mr. Detail,

Hope you're well. At the top of the page, on which you view this post, you'll see ""BB" inside an oval. Immediately to the right, you see "FAQ". Click on the that, and you'll arrive at the FAQ "home page". There are drop-down menus, covering a wide range of topics in the realm of Volvology.

When you press the button, to move the seat, does the motor run and the seat not move? If so, then: (a) the drive cable's end has worn, and so no longer engages the sprocket, that drives the seat or (b) the track is jammed by, say, a coin or other item. There are "fixes" in the FAQs.

If pressing the front/back button does not cause the motor to run, it is most likely that there's some corrosion on a connector. A layer of corrosion a few molecules thick - invisible to the unaided eye - can block the flow of current.

As tedv noted, seat motors seem to be very durable.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

Thanks much Spook for your detailed response.
I don't get over here much (RWD side) so I almost forgot how to get back to this post.
