Mystery Strap With Welded Nut Under Car 700 1990

Okay, I have seen this under the car in years past. I have no idea what it is, and no mechanic has ever said anything about it to me.

I am now attempting to do 100% of the work to this car by myself and am getting ready to re-do underneath with new bushings and such. (Did the rear springs today, as a matter of fact.)

This strap appears to be coming from somewhere on the tranny, but I did not take the time to confirm where, exactly. It is jammed in that position, though; I could not move it with just my hand.

There is no obvious place above it that it connects to, and the nut is on the bottom, so it probably has something that goes above it rather than below. But what? A shield or a hanger for the exhaust?

That is an exhaust pipe anti-vibration brace. When your exhaust was replaced, somebody failed to reconnect the clamp.

Is this the missing clamp.bracket?

No, that's the bracket that bolts to the bellhousing and the top side of the downpipe. Further forward than what you're looking for.

Well what do I need, then? What is it called, properly? Do you have a photo of one properly installed and a part number for me? Either would be great. Thanks!

That bracket was the subject of a Volvo TSB 25709 from Dec 92 for the 1990 model year. I added this to my car. I unfortunately don't have the copy which has the special clamp part number. They issued it to correct exhaust vibrations. Your local dealer or a Brickboard member with VADIS access can get the TSB with the part number.

Do you have a photo of what that should look like and a part number for the clamp? I had some wicked metal-on-metal rattle down there and I think the guy took that off to fix it. I thought it was some sort of shield around the driveshaft, but I had never been under the Volvo at that time. No idea.

The fix the Volvo Indy guy did (removal of something) he said would not harm the car at all and would make it a lot more pleasant to drive without the machine gun sounds when I gave it gas. It was years ago (like a decade) and this probably was his solution because I could not afford anything better.

I do not know what he did, but I am assuming that this was it.

Any harm in leaving it this way? I would rather have my car properly buttoned up, you know...

Also, does this hanger look to be bent or are the pipes shifted out of position?

Thanks for your time!
