Koyo Rack outer Tie rod end 900 1993

So the alignment shop that I actually trust sent me away with a 940 wagon unable to be aligned. I suspected as much ahead of time but the reason shocked me...the tie rod ends are completely fused to the tie rods. For grins I pulled the whole tie rod with end attached, put it in the vice and wailed on it with a pipe wrench and it is not going anywhere.

After investigating the options for my Koyo rack it because clear that a rebuild rack from Jorgen was basically only $25 more that two new inner rods so I made the obvious choice. Here is the rub...

I want the MOOG or OEM quality outer rod ends but I am having a hard time verifying the part. Everyone lists the CAM/TRW and the ZF but I only find off-brands listed for the Koyo. Searching the archives leads me to believe that the outer is the same as the Cam/TRW but I would like verification before ordering. Can anyone absolutely swear they are the same?

        Yes, but later in that same thread jd620 found the Koyo ends to be about 3mm shorter, saying:

        "The only differences I could see is that the length is about 3mm shorter on the Koyo and the rubber boot around the joint is slightly smaller on the Koyo. I believe the CAM, TRW, And ZF would be interchangeable with the Koyo and that the 3mm difference in length would easily be taken up by the inner tie rod threads."

        That means re-adjusting TOE on both sides, even if only one Koyo end is replaced by a CAM/TRW.

        I've got 198,600 mi on mine now, and will probably stick with Koyo if still available when the time comes.

          Thanks...despite my understanding of these things I was having a hard time following everything. Time to order the parts as the aftermarket partds all scream URO and their other names.

    Dear Onkel Udo,

    Hope you're well. Did you saturate with a penetrating oil (PB Blaster, Kroil, etc.) the tie-rod end lock nuts?

    I ask, because a penetrating oil - as it percolates through micro-channels in the corrosion - weakens the corrosion bond. I recently took in for alignment a '93 940, and - having saturated the tie-rod lock nut daily for a week - was pleased to hear from the wrench-turner that the lock nut and tie rod end moved easily. The tie rod ends had been in place for a decade, here in the northeast, where salt is widely used on roads during the winter.

    It could be that your tie-rod ends truly cannot be removed. But I'd apply penetrating oil daily (or twice daily) for a week, and try again.

      I ordered the rack anyway for good measure. The boots are original and obviously brittle. The boots on the ends are toast but I was keeping them rust free with axle grease liberally applied every time I am under the car.

      My real concern is getting the MOOG Problem Solver ends for my re-install. The OEM ends are available but on top of being more expensive, the estimated shipping is over two weeks. I want to put this in AM Friday next week for an alignment later that day.

      On another note, I called the alignment shop (which I used to trust) and told them they cannot use the VIN for rack type on this era of Volvo as just a warning for the future. Told them the data plate tells the story and in this case just scraping the muck off the rack did as well (both indicated the Koyo). He got a little crappy with me and told me it must have been replaced, etc, etc.

      On a personal note. This is f!#$%!#$%!#$% reason I learn to do my own work...house, car, computers, almost anything. I even got my universal license last month because some jack-hole contractor tried to tell me my condensor on my home AC unit was bad after I showed him the obvious leak in the the return line cause by rubbing on a nail. Seriously? You might be the professional but other people may not be stupid.
