164 radiator cooling fan 140-160

Hi All,
I am still getting my '74 164 road worthy. I was having problems with the D-Jetronic and I'm looking for reliability so I took off the F.I. and I'm rebuilding some Strombergs to put on in it's place.
I just had the radiator re-cored and I am getting ready to install it and a new water pump this weekend. I'm looking for an upgrade and I'm considering getting rid of the thermo fan clutch and installing a good used electric cooling fan that came out an 850 that I used to own. I think I'll tap the plate where the auxiliary air valve was in the head and mount a thermo-fan switch there. Does anyone have any suggestions for what temperature thermo-fan switch I should shoot for to keep my B30 happy temp wise?
Thanks in advance for the help, Matt

An early 240 alloy mechanical fan is the best way to keep it cool.

#5 runs hot on them anyway...

I suggest using a Hayden fan controller part number 3647. I usually buy mine from Oreillys for less than $40.00.

This fan controller is adjustable via a small pot switch, has a built in fan relay and has a temperature probe you insert in between the cooling fins of the radiator.

Hi Eric,
That's a good idea, I appreciate your help. I saw one at Pep Boys for that price, just didn't know how well they worked. I'll pick one up and try it, that would be easier I think.
Thanks, Matt

Hello Matt,

We have been using the Hayden fan controller for at least 10 years without any malfunctions that weren't due to human error. Mostly damaging the sensor probe wire when the probe is not removed before the radiator is. Fortunately they don't cost a lot.

I like the fact that you aren't limited to a fixed temperature sensor and you can adjust the pot switch quite easily to start the fan at your desired temperature.
