Throttle Body gettind dity quickly. 900 1994

I recently cleaned my daughters 1994 940 throttle body ( about 6 weeks ago ). Just removed it again to check/ adjust the throttle position switch and it has lots if dirty oily spatter on the air box side and an oily film on the intake manifold side. Presumably coming from the crankcase breather tube. Is there an easy way to correct this or is it an omen of bad things to come??

Mike

Dear mdmike52,

Hope you're well. Oily residues in the throttle body suggest that the flame trap is plugged. See this site's FAQs for how to clean the flame trap. Once that's done, the problem should "go away". A plugged flame trap can also result in oil being forced past seals. That can damage the timing belt. At an extreme, crankcase over-pressure can displace the rear main seal. Replacing that seal means pulling the transmission. Thus, do not delay cleaning the flame trap.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks Spook

I'll get on that before the car gets started again. I do see some oil seepage around the filler cap and around the water pump area.

Thanks
Mike

This is a good argument for synthetic oils... I have, in twenty five years of driving six RWD Volvos, never had a flame trap clog up or any untoward varnish or dirt in the intake system thanks to synthetics. They save maintenance work and improve fuel economy too.
