Dear 544ever,

Hope you're well. Is the spare tire the factory-supplied emergency-use-only spare? If so, it is not safe to use.

Tires that are more than a decade old are "time expired" even if they've never been used. Rubber deteriorates with time and exposure to air.

A brand-new tire - that is 20 years old - could simply disintegrate suddenly.

You've surely seen pieces of tires alongside highways. Those are usually the remains of truck tires. When a truck tire disintegrates, 70-100 pounds of rubber and steel go flying. Because tractor-trailers have 18 tires, a single-tire failure on the trailer may not be immediately obvious.

When a car tire disintegrates, the driver may lose control.

In short, time-expired tires should not be used. They should be re-cycled.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
