reduced output from blower but no noise 200 1993

Just noticed today the heater fan is putting out way less air than yesterday. Still works on all 4 speeds and no noise just way less air. Could this be just the switch? Gonna try to scare up a pnp switch as an optimistic first guess.. the blower is original so maybe my day has finally come...

When mine failed about 2 years ago it worked with some kind of pulsations at speed 2, but could seem to run normally at speed 3 or 4. That repeated over 1 month not more than two before it stopped working dead.

Commutators and brushes were totally worn while bushings were in very good condition. That is because motor was taken out and had been lubricated 15 years ago. The failed motor was original in my 1982 with 240k miles (390k km and no air conditioning).

To me if your car has this kind of mileage it is better to replace the motor.

If it were mine I would look at the possibility to lubricate the new motor. As long as it is not sealed extensively. I took this habit since I saw how much lubricant manufacturers put in bicycle wheel and pedal bearings.

With cleanflametrap.com you are on the right track.

Yep sounds like you will be going in. Did mine not to hard to do, go in through the sides to remove motor at least its not a heater core thats even worse.

ugh... after 22 it had to go in the middle of the winter... just when I had developed some nice indoor hobbies like watching House of Cards from the beginning.

Could also be some biogunk that, over the years, filtered through the cabin air intake under and in front of the windshield, so you have a clog at the rather coarse filter mesh.

Or in their someplace.

Does the blower motor sound different? Usually, if obstruction on the air intake or output, the fan motor note may rise a bit.

If the fan motor note has dropped, well, perhaps the blower motor lube is finally spent, the contacts between brushes and the on-armature contacts are wearing down, or, well, who know.

Our Uncle Art Benstein has a super swell write up on Volvo 240 HVAC blower motor replacement.

I believe to replacement blower motors exist. One from Siemens and another, well, I dunno.

Please research!

Others may have helpful suggestions coming up in a pinch of the brickboard.

cheers,

Carmex Head.

Thanks man, yeah I thought blockage too but now that I listened to it in the driveway the fan is definitely not turning as fast as it should and making minor "funny" noises so in I go. Just ordered the eeuroparts VDO blower and resistor. Since I've already got some morally questionable repairs into this car and I'm real good at repairing 240 plastics I'm leaning towards the chainsaw procedure - unless someone can talk me out of it. Been studying Art's procedure...

Plastic repair reduced output from blower but no noise 200 1993

I do want to find out what plastic glue/cement works, and proper method. Gotta fix 2 plastic driver's door bins, and 2 P Brake console covers. Plus more little trim pcs.
Anyone ever have success w epoxy formulated for plastics?

A lot of the interior plastic is PVC so PVC cement from the hardware store plumbing section will work. If you have a bandsaw you can cut a slice off a stick of PVC drain pipe and use it for reinforcements. I don't know about the heater housing.

I've had good luck with the 2 part epoxy labeled "for plastic". In fact my door pockets are by now made almost entirely of this epoxy and odd pieces of old printed circuit cards, cut up blue junction boxes and other odd plastic patches on the inside.
