Busted vacuum canister front chassis 700 1986

Hello All, I have a 1986 740 Volvo 4cyl that was wrecked and under the front cross member, (Attached to it) there "was" a chamber (I guess) that a hose connected to the intake manifold. The hose is maybe a 3/8" ID, and the chamber was approximately 18" long, and kinda oval shaped, maybe 2"H by 4"W?? This thing is busted all to pieces and I can't find any information as to what the heck it is. Do any of you know what that thing is? Thanks!

Hi,

I believe that thing is the charcoal canister. Its filled with charcoal to absorb fuel fumes from the tank at back. You can find it in scrap yards or used at eBay. It is labelled as RP (Rochester Product - a subsidiary of General Motors).

Amarin.

It's actually a vacuum tank(per haynes manual). The charcoal canister is in the engine compartment. I do know 85-89 are pretty much the same. That canister may also be used on later yrs. Salvage yard is probably going to be your best bet. Not a very common replacement item.

OK Thanks, if it is a vacuum canister that is empty, I was thinking about fabricating one out of PVC pipe.

If your profile is still correct in Tn. Knoxville Pullapart.com has 3 89 740s on the lot. Believe me, if you have never did the pullapart. It is well worth the drive. You take your own tools, price is such that a mercedes alternator is the same price as a geo metro. They deal in volume. You can't call them, just info. But website tells you what models they have and when they were put on the lot. Get what you need, those yr groups are getting harder to find.
