Seat Belt Latch Won't Release 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 sedan, but the seat belt system may be similar to a few other models as well.

The tongue of the driver's seat belt latch (male) is inserted into the receiving receptacle (female) by the driver's right hip. It won't come out. Pushing the red button and jiggling and prying with small tools and adding lubricant has made no difference. Presently, I need to climb in and out under the seat belt straps.

I am aware that these receptacles wear out - I replaced this very one several years ago. Yes, I will replace it again, but first I need to separate it from the seat beat latch. It feels and appears to be functioning normally, but obviously isn't. The retractors adjacent to the door work fine, which is why there is enough slack to climb in and out while the latch is stuck.

When the latch is inserted, a steel bar moves across the slotted opening, through the hole in the latch's tongue. This secures the seat belt tongue in the receptacle. Pushing the red button is supposed to release this steel bar. That steel bar through the hole in the latch won't move.

How can I release the latch from the receptacle?
Thank you!

    Maybe the spring is jammed:

"Seat Belt Latch Red Button Replacement. [Larry Dennis] This red button in the latch deteriorates in the sun and can break. An easy fix is to find one from a car that has seen less sun, usually from the back seat belt latches. The button will pop off easily with a pocket knife under the tab on the side of the red button. Be carefull not to drop anything down in there. There is a spring that sits in a hole under the red button which usually stays in place while removing the red button. Just pop the new one in place. Just make sure the belt latch operates properly before someone uses it. "

      Success!
      Thank you aleekat and jimo.

The orange "PRESS" button easily pops off. View the receptacle looking across the center console. You can see the two orange ears which protrude down, inside, along the ends of the receptacle (front and back). Jam a small flathead screwdriver between the inside black rectangle and the orange ear. Pushing outward, away from the center of the receptacle, the ear should pop off very easily. View image to see the construction of the ears.

Unjamming the latch took more work. Tools that I found especially helpful were a stiff wire like a bobby (hair) pin, a thin steel blade (thinner than a butter knife - I used the visor clip for my garage door opener), tweezers, flashlight and prayer. I poked and probed extensively, then found the culprit: A thin, green piece of broken plastic, about half the size of a dime. I suspect it was part of the deck upon which the tiny seat belt bulb sits, as the loose piece was found adjacent to the bulb. Removed with tweezers, and all is well again.

      I love this forum!
On my way to donate again!
